Solid Foods - dirty Bib washing tips?

Hi, we just started solids and the bibs and washcloths we use get REALLY dirty from the food (and we use wet washclothes to wipe faces afterwards, so those get really really really dirty)...  I would love to be able to do laundry every 2-3 days instead of every day, but by the time we throw the bibs in the wash they STINK...!!!  The only solution I can think of is to rinse them and hang up to dry after every meal, but that is time consuming and I definitely don't have the time, but I'll do it if that's the only solution, or to do tiny loads every day (also time consuming). :(  Anyone else have any tips on what to do??? :(

 Thanks!!

  • Just a thought ... if you want to avoid washing bibs altogether, you can buy plastic bibs.  That way, you only have to wipe them clean.

    For example:

Not sure what to do about the washcloths, other than to rinse immediately afterwards.

  • I keep a bucket of water and borax in the laundry room and throw blow out onsies, bibs and wash cloths in. None of my kids stuff has stains now. I do laundry 3 times a week or so.

  • they make "feeding bibs" that have a plastic coating on the outside. after you're done, you just wipe them down and they're good to go till next time. we got some because like you, i was tired of the bib issue and they work soooo much better. they are also bigger than regular bibs so baby wont get dirty either.

  • I would rinse and pre-treat the dirty bibs and clothes and put them by the washer.  Then, try washing only every 2-3 days.  I also liked pp suggestion of the bucket of pretreat solution.  I haven't started solids yet, but when something gets really poopy or something I find the pre-treat and rinse works pretty well for preventing set in stains.

How do you find time to do laundry 3x a week - wow.

I use washclothes to wipe DD and DS's face once they are finished eating, also.  The washclothes are wet so I usually rince and hang them over the sink until the dry before throwing them in the hamper.  I usually let the bibs just dry witht the food on them - no rinsing. I have not had any problems so far.

At some point I started using plastic bibs with DS (he uses nothing now) and will get some more for DD eventually

  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions!!  I will try them all...unfortunately I forgot to mention that our laundry room is in the basement and our basement is a walk out, so unless I rinse the bibs good, they have been attracting bugs (ew!).

    I appreciate the help!!!!!!

  • Being that I am not so excited about doing any laundry I only use bibbitec bibs. No fasteners and they NEVER stain or Smell and they are not plastic...my boys love to wear them..super soft with a  protective shell. and they are made in the USA too. www.bibbitec.com
