Tummy Time Question

My LO does a lot of her tummy time on my chest. She has great neck strength and is almost sitting up by herself, but she doesn't seem to push herself up much when I lay her completely flat on the floor on her stomach. I am not sure if this means maybe I should give her more tummy time flat on the floor rather than on my chest. Any ideas? She has just turned three months old.

Re: Tummy Time Question

  • Maybe try out more tummy time on the floor and see if it helps! :) My LO loved being on my chest all the time too but can do so much more on the floor.

  • My LO hated tummy time on the floor so I would hold her on my chest as well. Then I used a Boppy pillow and would put her on the couch while I sat on the floor in front of her so she could see me. This seemed to work a little better to have her at eye level with me so that when she raised her head she could see me. She is now four months and has just recently started tolerating some floor time and can now do the "superman" pose (lays on tummy with arms at side, back arched, and head lifted in the air. She has not grasped the concept of putting her arms underneath her to push herself up further. I wouldn't worry about your LO just yet...she is developing how like she should. Just continue to do what feels most natural to you and her....you should see her really start to improve over the next few weeks.
  • My little man hates floor tummy time but our pediatrician was adamant that he do an hour on the floor without any assistance. DS also has a head that is off the charts huge and she said he'll need plenty of practice to build extra muscles to hold that bad boy up and to not get a flat spot. So as much as it killed me we have been doing it since he was a month old. At 12 weeks he could roll over, push himself up and stay there and has even started crawling like motions and can make it off his mat. He can sit up better than older babies and his head is perfectly round. I know it's awful hearing them scream but my pedi put it saying "no one likes to go to the gym" and it made me feel better because that's what tummy time is, a baby workout. I
  • I always put LO on the floor for tummy time. I got on the floor with her with toys, put her in front of things that would catch her attention-she eventually got used to it.  Her head is also biggish, and i think this has helped her. She's fairly advanced for 6 months (she's a couple weeks from crawling it seems) and can tolerate tummy time for long periods of time. i do know it was hard for her for a little bit because of reflux, and when she was doing the superman pose shed get irritate because it would make her spit up but other than that.....

  • Her neck muscles are really strong and she doesn't spend any time on her back except to sleep and occasionally when she is eating. She is about to sit up by herself and is rolling over, it is just the crawling. She makes the right movements and can lift her head but doesn't really push up with her arms in that positions. She uses her arms great in any other position. The pedi didn't say anything about floor time last visit and said her neck strength was great. That's why I was kind of confused if floor time mattered.
