STM come in!

Anybody hire a doula? How did you feel about the decision? Any insights on when to hire one etc? I doubt I will be able to have a midwife for this pregnancy and I am thinking that a doula might at least help me have the kind of birth I want. DH and I also live far from family and we are going to need some post partum support.

Re: STM come in!

  • I hired a doula when I was around 7 months (I think?) last time and absolutely loved her.  She was wonderful - especially when everything completely went off the rails and I ended up with a semi-emergency c-section.

If we weren't moving cross-country in a few weeks, I would be hiring the same one.  I absolutely will find a doula this time to support my VBAC attempt.  I think I will start looking closer to the 24 week mark this time since I'll really be focusing my search on someone who has worked with multiple couples through successful VBACs.

For any FTMs lurking, we also participated in Bradley classes last time and learned so much.  Highly recommend!

  • Why don't you think you can have a MW? Just curious!

Sparkles, I wanted to do Bradley, but they only offered hypnobirth at my hospital, so I did that instead. Totally regret it. I'm sure it works great for some people, but I have a hard time shutting my thinking off. I think I would have done better with Bradley. Not that it mattered, ultimately, I ended up with 2 C-sections lol

  • Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I just completely fell asleep! @shannonsky I know my old midwife group won't take me with my loss history so I guess I am making assumptions about how appropriate I am. I could look into it but I won't be leaving the care of my RE until after the first trimester so I guess it depends on a lot of things. @honey740 I live in Washington, DC! In the district proper. I guess I'm worried about them all getting booked up but it seems like a third trimester thing.

  • @honey740 I was with the midwives at WHC with my first pregnancy. I am familiar with community of hope but I'm just not sure about a birth center yet and don't feel ready to commit. If I did a midwife again I'd want one with hospital privileges.

@ebwhit, would they not take you back? I don't know anything about your situation but I haven't every seen a midwifery PX exclude anyone based on past pregnancy unless it was a very medically complicated Situation. Whatever you chose, meet the providers first, it's OK to interview THEM and I find you need to find a hospital compatible with your needs too since the providers play by their rules.
