VBAC or no?

I was super active on this board throughout my pregnancy, but not so much after his birth, so I apologize if this has been discussed (I can't find in search).

My husband and I have decided to TTC baby #2 early 2014.  I dreamed of a natural vaginal birth with no pain meds for my first birth, which ended in a 41 week induction due to high blood pressure and no amniotic fluid - only to be in labor for 52 hours (no pain meds) which eventually ended in a c-section (which was the easiest part of the whole thing).  I'm not kidding myself this time around, labor doesn't "go as planned".  You do what is best for your baby and yourself, period.  Part of me wants to go into pregnancy #2 requesting a c-section, which is so opposite of how I approached my son's birth :-/  Part of me wants a home VBAC.  So, I'm just curious what everyone else is thinking.

Did you have a planned c-section with LO?  Did you have a VBAC?  How will you "plan" the birth of your next LO?

Re: VBAC or no?

  • I had a vaginal birth but thought from week 30-38 that I was going to have a CS due to LO being breech. He didn't flip until week 38 and they had to induce me at 39 due to pregnancy induced hypertension. I was upset that I wouldn't get to experience going into labor on my own but I too now realize that you just cannot plan these things. Next time around I hope to go into labor on my own as long as I don't have high blood pressure again. But for you, I wouldn't "plan" anything. We can have a preference but it may not work out. These babies are in charge! Haha I think there's lots of women on here that had a VBAC though. I'd say, wait and see how pregnancy goes. If all is well, not high blood pressure, etc, maybe you can have a home birth! Never know!

I will, of course!  There is no way to know how it will all go!  I'm just curious how everyone else is approaching the next baby based on past labor experiences.
  • I ended up with a csection at 41 weeks. O wouldn't drop after over 24 hrs of labor. Turns out the she was posterior (face up). She was 7 lbs 11 oz and I'm very petite so I guess she couldn't make her way down. In hindsight I would have done some things differently to see if I could get her to drop.

For the next baby I'm hoping for a VBAC. I don't like the idea of delivering at 39 weeks, which is when they like to do C-sections. Unless medically necessary, I want baby to come when he/she is ready. Plus recovering from a csection sucks...as you well know. Obviously I'll do what I have to do for a healthy baby but hoping for VBAC.

Actually, my c-section recovery was pretty dang easy.  I was up walking around the next day.  I had no pain, no oozing, no issues at all.  I think this is why the thought of a second c-section sounds better than a VBAC  :-S
  • I thought I was taking an open-minded, see-what-happens approach to this birth, but I ended up very disappointed with my unplanned c-section (tbh, I still think if we'd stayed home longer it wouldn't have happened, but the app started beeping at me and I got scared...). I'm hoping to do a VBAC next time, but obviously know that another slice 'n dice is a very real possibility.

  • All I know is I am getting an epidural stat! I tried to do it without pain meds and I didn't make it far. F that noise!

OMG, I'm jealous!! I was able to get up and walk around a little the next day but getting up and down was really painful for at least a week. I also had a bad reaction to the medication during the c-section and my blood pressure dropped. I had a spinal leak from the epidural which gave me the absolute worst headache of my life...that a lasted on and off for over 2 weeks. Actually had to stay an extra night because of it. I didn't really have a lot of pain from the incision and only took ibuprofen after a couple of days but everything that went along with the c-section was a miserable experience.

I should note too that a big reason I want to do VBAC is because I had a really hard time with breastfeeding for the first two weeks and I attribute a lot of the trouble to not being able to nurse right away. As I said, my blood pressure dropped and I got the shakes really bad when they were trying to stitch me up so I wasn't able to hold/see her for about 20 minutes.

I do understand wanting another CS for the benefit of planning though. Nice to know and be able to plan...especially with #2 because then you can have child care arranged with #1. I just really want to experience a natural birth for many reasons.

  • I just roll with whatever ends up happening.  Way too early for me to think about birthing a baby that hasn't even been conceived yet!

I know many people have successful VBAC experiences, so if I were you I would definitely research that as an option and make sure I had an OB that was OK with that route.  But I would be too nervous to do a VBAC at home-- I'd want to do it in a hospital just in case.  Good luck on TTC #2 and with your whole journey.

  • My OB is very pro-VBAC. I will plan on that for my next pregnancy, but will, of course, be open to the possibility of another c-section, if necessary. I actually had an easy recovery too, but would like to experience a vaginal birth... fx the next one isn't breech too.

  • same here, LO was breech, never flipped so had a scheduled c-sec. We had planned on a natural birth with a doula.  Total opposite happened.  I had a decent recovery but a terrible time with breastfeeding which was devastating for me - only lasted 4 months and supp formula too

Id like to do a VBAC for #2 but I also see the positives for a c-sec one being, I dont want a scar plus a stretched out vagina.  It may sound greedy but thats how I feel.

I want to BF so badly next time that Im opting for a VBAC as long as my OB supports & the scar tissue has healed
