Vanishing twin?

Hello! I found out we are having twins yesterday! Didn't hear any heartbeats (I'm 5 1/2 weeks) but I'm going back next week to see them again. The doc wouldn't confirm if its for SURE twins but he said he def sees 2 sacs of fluid. Since researching twin pregnancy I keep coming across the vanishing twin syndrome and can't help but worry this might happen :( anyone else having this dilemma?

Re: Vanishing twin?

  • I was worried about vanishing twin when I found out we were expecting twins too. It is hard to say at this early in the game if that is what you are experiencing. You may have two sacs that implant and have hb's, just know its more common because you found out so early. I think the percent of vanishing twin is 30% but it is higher if you had IVF or something else I think as well. I hate to tell you what I keep hearing, but it's true. You just have to wait and see.

  • I think this question gets asked 12 times a week in about 7 different ways lol! :) Your not alone in worrying about that I did and I think every other MoM on here did. If you look back on the board this past week I typed out my story a few times but long story short mine measured about a month apart up until week 15 baby B had almost no fluid (to the point ultrasounds he didn't even look like a baby) and a weak heart beat. Week 16 he regained fluid some how and slowly caught up and is now the bigger twin. I am 22 weeks and 2 days with spontaneous di/di twin boys and all is well except for bed rest for cervixal issues. They told me he wouldn't make it and he would just disappear or have several abnormalities with his kidneys, limb growth, etc...well he is 100% healthy and fine and is my most active twin who is always kicking my ribs and driving me crazy. In fact they didn't even acknowledge his presence until week 16 because they always assumed he would die because his gestational sac wouldn't grow at all but it did. Im an extreme case but if mine pulled threw that I would say anything is possible. Stay away from google it does no good at all just take it easy drink lots of water and rest. Congrats on the pregnancy!

You poor thing having to go week to week hearing all the bad news! I'm SOOO happy for you that your little guy pulled through and they are both healthy and strong it sounds like! Haha. Hopefully he'll stay off your ribs lol. I go on Thusday to hopefully hear the heartbeats, I'll be about 6 1/2 then so well see. Thanks again for sharing xoxo

You probably won't be able to hear the heartbeats until around week 11 or 12 from what I have read. They detected mine on the US at almost 8 weeks but we didn't hear them. So don't get upset if that is the case, 6 weeks is still really early. I didn't have my first US until about 8 weeks.

This - I'm 12 weeks and have not heard heartbeats. I will most likely be monitored on an U/S for heartbeats until we're around 20 weeks. It's too difficult for my OB to determine where the twins are located on the doppler and it's just easier this way. Be prepared for a lot of ultrasounds... and a lot of wait and see moments. But, if you see HB's your chances of vanishing twin go down more as well. So just hang in there. :)

  • While they might not hear the HBs, they can see them on the screen - we went back at 7 weeks to see a heartbeat (didn't see either a baby or hb in the single sac at 5 weeks) and saw TWO heart beats & sacs & babies. While I heard the hearts at 12 weeks for the first time, I had seen the heartbeats plenty of times before that. I think seeing the heart beat is just as comforting as hearing it.

Ugh, all of what babywillmake3 said - its a sad reality and I was worried about VTS until 12weeks when they were both looking strong, good, and had strong hbs and our genetic tests came back negative for issues. Worrying is no bueno so I tried to occupy myself in other ways to take my mind off of it.
