I was completely surprised!
He had asked my parents (mom and stepdad, dad and stepmom) a week prior. He told his parents a couple hours before we ended up going on a casual drive.
We had been dating for five years. Our wedding was one day after our six year dating anniversary.
I was expecting it at the beginning of the trip, but after three weeks with nothing I thought he wasn't going to.
Nobody knew.
We had been dating a year.

We went out to Montauk lighthouse on a random Weds. There are giant rocks lining the water and we were walking along them when he stopped and got down on one knee. It was just us, the rocks, and the water. Then a huge wave came up and soaked him. Priceless.
Were you surprised or expecting it? Completely surprised.
Did anyone know he was going to propose (ie: parents?) Hmmmm, ya know I don't know! Going to go ask him.........his best friend knew.
How long had you been dating when you got engaged? 6 1/2 years (began dating at age 18). Got married on our 8 year dating anniversary. Can't believe we'll be together 14 years this November!
O14 January Signature Challenge: Snow Fails
We talked a lot about marriage but I wasn't expecting it at that time. We went up north to my family's cabin and he had asked my dad for permission and my dad wouldn't give him an answer. He made my poor hubby stress out for approx. 5 hours when he pulled him outside with my mom to talk about it. I had no idea what was going on. They finally gave him the okay and he was so relieved he asked me that night in bed at 11pm - after all the stress he couldn't wait till the following day to ask me on the beach like he intended to do. He was so nervous all day but I thought he was sick so I kept shoving pepto and other meds down his throat because I was afraid he'd be too sick to enjoy our get away haha. We then had a long 3 years before we actually got married in June of 2011!
We had been together for a long time and had been living together for a while as well, so it was expected, but had no idea when or how. I was very surprised.
Christmas Eve he drove an hour out to take my mom to lunch and afterward he drove her to our family jewler to pick up the ring he designed and told her then (he asked her permission when we told her we were moving in together). She didn't know when or how.

How long had you been dating when you got engaged? 8 months after we met. We got married 14 months later.
He was acting kind of shifty so I suspected something but he's always said he didn't see the need to get married so I thought nothing of it.
Two of our friends knew and he had asked my Dad.
He proposed 3 years after we met.
He proposed to me April 3, 2010. We are big Harry Potter nerds, so he actually made a Golden Snitch and inscribed "I open at our beginning" on it (in the book it says, "I open at the close.") *ETA: the ring was inside the Snitch.
Were you surprised or expecting it?
We had been together for over 4 years at that point, so I was expecting it soon, but didn't know exactly when. In fact, I had given him an ultimatum of sorts that if he didn't propose by the time my lease was up in June, I would move back to Indiana (we were living in VA at the time) to be closer to my family, and he could follow me there if he wanted to stay together.
He had asked my parents the previous Thanksgiving, and they were getting nervous that he had changed his mind since it took him so long. My mom got to the point where she was asking me if we were engaged yet practically every time we talked. Didn't really do much for my confidence.
How long had you been dating when you got engaged?
No one knew beforehand. We had been together a year.
Later on he gave me his great grandmother's ring since he's the oldest grandchild.
He proposed go me on Christmas, it was cold, drizzling and we were by Christmas lights. I love cold, rain, and Christmas (: so it was awesome. He got down on one knee and told me things and then asked me and here we are lol.

I had a feeling he was going to but I had no idea when.

Were you surprised or expecting it? I was expecting a proposal at some point in the near future, but not on my birthday. He had always said he wasn't going to do it on a big occasion (birthday, Xmas, etc).
Did anyone know he was going to propose (ie: parents?) He had asked my dad for "permission", so my parents - and his - knew the proposal was coming, but no one knew he'd do it on my birthday!
How long had you been dating when you got engaged? 1 1/2 years
We were moving from San Fran to Colorado and had decided to make a road trip out of it. That day we were at Arches and we wanted to take the dogs on a hike, but unfortunately they weren't allowed on any of the trails because it was too populated. He was really bummed, so after we got back in the car, he was trying to find a place along the Colorado river to stop and let the dogs out to play. We finally found a spot just before we hit the Colorado/Utah border and let the dogs out. I was busy yelling at the dogs to stick around and wasn't really paying attention to what DH was saying until he finally was like "hey! I have a question for you". I turned around and he was holding the ring in his hand and asked me to marry him. I said yes! and then I immediately turned around and yelled at the dogs again (I'm easily distracted haha).

I was completely surprised. I knew we'd get married eventually, but didn't expect it at all. Looking back on it, I probably shouldn't have been since he kept sneaking off during our road trip. He later told me he was only going to propose if he found the perfect ring while we were driving out to CO.

I think my SIL knew.

about a year and a half. We got married a year and a half later.
It was a random Thursday night. I got home from work and he had made Chinese food for dinner (egg drop soup and beef lo mein). After we finished eating, he brought out the fortune cookies he made and gave one to me. As I was opening it up, he got down on one knee and went into a spiel about how much he loved me and our future together. I thought he was just being weird until I found the ring inside the cookie and the fortune read "Will you marry me?"

Extremely surprised!! I actually said "thank you" as my response because I was in shock! He still teases me about that.

My parents knew (he asked for permission first), his parents, my sister and his siblings all knew. He's not good at keeping secrets!

We had been dating just over 2 years when we were engaged and our engagement was 14 months!
My husband is clueless about HP and constantly teases me about it. While pregnant he got me the shirt below because he thought it had something to do with expecting. Love him for trying!
Edit - Wrinkled because I wore it yesterday and just noticed my photo bomber...
Were you surprised or expecting it? I knew we were going to get engaged, we had looked at rings but I didn't expect it yet. We went to FL in March during DH's spring break and he always said he would propose after graduation and his first real paycheck which was in June.
