PCOS Pregos

Any PCOS pregos out there? I am wondering if your OBGYN is doing anything extra for your pregnancy. Such as extra blood work or tests. My Endo has told me that my OBGYN needs to refere me to a reproductive Endo and order weekly HCG / progesterone and thyroid tests. My OBGYN says that none of that is necessary and doesn't want to see me again for another month. PCOS has an increased risk of miscarriage and a little extra testing would be reassuring for me especially since this is my first pregnancy. What has your doc recomended for you?

Re: PCOS Pregos

  • Yes! My doctor has me on progesterone and is monitoring labwork.

Yes I see an re and he has me on progesterone suppliments and he closely monitored my hcg levels during weeks 4 and 5. Also have had 3 ultrasounds with another this week. I have found that reg obgyn docs don't give enough consideration to Pcos. Don't be afraid to push for what you want..I would push for porogesterone. Pcos girls are almost always low. Good luck to you.

  • I am on Progesterone and have blood work w/ ultrasound weekly. My RE probably won't release me for a few more weeks. I am starting week 7!! :) I agree, push for what you want!
  • I was seeing an RE (we had been trying for a year on our own) and he diagnosed me with PCOS.  I having been taking progesterone since ovulation, and will until 10 weeks.  Since becoming pregnant, I've had two betas to test my HCG levels and two ultrasounds (one at 6w, one at 8w).  This is pretty standard when under the care of an RE and the treatments any patient under his care would recieve (with the exception of maybe progesterone).

  • I have pcos and see a RE. I'm taking glumetza (metformin), crinone, prenatal, extra folic acid, and a baby asprin. I go in every Monday for an ultrasound and bc I'm having triplets I will be going to a perinatal center starting on September 4th.
  • Aside from progesterone supplements, they aren't doing anything different. Im getting a ton of monitoring, but that is partly because i did IVF and partly because im high risk. Some doctors like to add metformin as a way to regulate hormones in the first 10 weeks.

  • Because of the risk of increased risk of gestational diabetes I will be doing a early glucose screening test at 24 weeks. My guess is tx recommendations differ based on other findings with your PCOS work up. My testosterone and insulin and glucose levels have all been normal - I just had those darn cysts and no ovulation nd that's it. My RE didn't recommend progesterone for me. I would definitely consider a second opinion if you feel like your doc doesn't really understand the syndrome.

  • I finally go to the ob Wednesday! I'm only taking metformin once a day so I'm hoping I can just stop taking it.
  • I have PCOS and did IUI with an RE, so I have had weekly u/s and bloodwork. I am on progesterone supplements because I was dx with low prog the cycle before I got pregnant. I will be off the supplements by 12w. My first appointment with the OB is this week. Not sure if he will want to do any more than the RE has already done.

  • I have PCOS that wasn't diagnosed until my first pregnancy. I had some bleeding that prompted blood work and they randomly checked progesterone too. I was put on supplements then, had it checked with this pregnancy too so I'm on them again. In my case I have thankfully avoided needing additional help conceiving which I think plays a part on how much early intervention you get. I would at least request that your progesterone be checked for peace of mind.

Baby girl #2 coming April 2014!
  • .My doctor has had my blood work done twice so far and I've had two U/Ss.  We didn't need help getting pregnant, but it was a big surprise!  Everything has looked fine, so far, so from now on it's just normal monthly appts until we switch to biweeklies.  I wasn't diagnosed with PCOS until this year, so I never had early testing with my other kids and have been blessed to have a take home baby with each pregnancy.
  • My RE has me on progesterone suppositories once a day before bed, 1500 mg of metformin, and I'll be getting a 3rd u/s this Wednesday. He hopes to take me off the progesterone if everything still looks good Wednesday. I'll be 9 weeks by then. No extra blood work here.
  • I have been on progesterone since ovulation (1x per day). Once I got my BFP it increased (2x per day) and will continue through first tri. I've also had betas drawn during week 4 and again next week, week 5. I don't know yet about ultrasounds, but I'm hoping for one soon. 6 and 8 weeks would be great.

  • Mild PCOS here but my OB doesn't seem to be very concerned about it. I didn't think PCOS mattered once you actually conceived but hmm, maybe I'm wrong!
  • Thank you everyone for the info/ support. I will be calling my Dr as soon as the office opens and putting my foot down. Thanks again.
  • I got a hold of my Dr and he seemed really angry and annoyed with me. He said, "Like I said before, your L cyst controls Prog until the placenta takes over so there is no reason for Prog to ever drop". " IDK why your Endo would ever suggest this, it's a complete waste of time. I see PCOS patients every day and I have never had to monitor Prog and never ordered supplements. This is rediculous". So I just said, "I have been going to you for over 10 years and I trust you and value your opinions, but in this situation I'm going to have to insist that you order this test. I am fine with it being a waste of time because it is the reassurance I need. We can discuss this further at my next appointment, but for now please just order the test. We left it off with him ordering it. He made me feel bad but when it comes to my baby, I'm always going to fight.
  • Sorry he was kind of a jerk about it! I hope for your sake it comes back normal but if it was a little low he might rethink the things he said to you. I hope this was a one time incident that doesn't continue throughout your pregnancy!
