Wetness irritation or ammonia?

DS got a nasty rash from going all night in some prefolds that I had gotten used. Because the had the ammonia smell after any pee even in daytime I figured ammonia was the culprit. I stripped them using advice from here and the smell is gone but the first time he went overnight in one the rash came back!
Did they not come all the way clean or could this rash just be from being in a wet diaper all night?
I don't think he has ever gone all night in any of my other diapers because the pockets leak and he has outgrown the absorbency of my nb prefolds.
I am afraid it is not just wetness irritation because the rash took days of desitin and sposies to go away. Should I strip again or just keep troubleshooting my pockets so I can use them overnight? Should I try something else ? Maybe switch detergents?

Do you have any fleece that you could use as a stay-dry liner in the prefolds? That might help determine if it's a wetness issue. If they don't smell, I don't think ammonia is your issue. Does he ever have this problem with the pockets?

Never had this problem with the pockets but I don't think he has ever been in a pocket more than 3 or 4 hours because of leaks. I am going to get some hemp inserts and see if that helps with that and then try overnight
