Toddlers: 24 Months+

Bicycle Trailer question

Hello Everyone!

I want to buy one of those bike trailers that you trail behind your bike and can fit a toddler.  I am looking online at options and am also considering the seat that goes in front or behind you.  Does anyone have any experience with these?  Do you like one over the other for a particular reason?  I want to start riding DD to school on my bike.

Re: Bicycle Trailer question

  • We have a Burley and love it. Good
For kids over age 1 and it can fit 2 at a time.
Not sure what the weight max is but we love ours and use it a lot.

  • We use a trailer. In our situation its a necessity because we have multiple children but i feel they are much safer. I would think a wiggly toddler directly on your bike could give you the potential to fall over. Also in a trailer I think there's more protection for your child should the bike fall. We have a via velo trailer and absolutely love it.

  • I decided on a trailer since the seat on the bike can be hard to balance if your toddler is wiggling. Plus the trailer has more protection from the elements and storage. We use ours to run to the store or go to the park for a picnic, it's great being able to toss everything in the back of it.

  • We actually have a trailer (Chariot brand) and love it.  I didn't realize how much I love it until I was in a serious bike crash and I was pretty injured...my daughter was completely un touched and told me it was fun.  I was told if she were in a seat she more than likely would not have survived my crash :( Now I am a HUGE believer and so thankful.  I never understood why my husband, cycling enthusiasts, bike shop workers were so against bike seats.  I thought "I have NEVER fallen off my bike" but really accidents can and do happen.  My daughter had a helmet but even without one in the chariot she would have been fine because it was basically like a roll cage.  She did two flips and because of the harness she did not even budge.
  • Wow!  Thanks for that info.  I will definitely be getting a trailer...which one I don't know yet.

  • We looked at the Burley but found the cost to be a bit too prohibitive for us.  Even used.  I've heard they are "the best" but we couldn't justify it.  So, we ended up getting a Schwinn.  We even found one at a garage sale and got an even better bargain and we love it.  And most importantly my daughter loves it.  She gets so excited when we go on a bike ride now!

  • We have a chariot trailer. Its the cabriolet, which is their less expensive one. we paid about $400 for it brand new. It's comparable to the Burley encore. I love it. Actually, I'm getting ready to take it out to watch the pro bike race come through town.

  • Oh man...yeah I don't know if I want to spend the money for a BURLEY or chariot, but then again, I don't want something with annoying features.  Wish I could test ride them!
