Talk to me about toddler beds/ transitioning etc...

DD sleeps great in her crib and no signs of crawling out or anything.. #2 is due in February and will plan to transition to crib around May or June.. I plan to get DD a twin bed eventually.. Can't decide to go to toddler bed (crib converts) first then twin sized? And also can't decide when? Thoughts? Advice? TIA!

Just go to twin. Toddler beds are short-lived and really hard to fit into if your toddler needs some extra cuddles.

  • We never did the toddler bed (and our crib converted too).  Our kids are 2 years apart and when we moved one, we needed the crib.  DD1 got out of her bed a lot.  DD2 and DD3 never did.  We transitioned DD2 at 20 mo and DD1 & 3 about 25 mo.
  • Both kids transitioned to a toddler bed, Dd at 15 months and Ds at 20 months. Dd tossed and rolled like crazy and rolled out of her toddler bed on many, many occasions. So I am glad that we went to a toddler bed first. We kept her in the toddler bed until DS was ready to move out of our room and into the crib, she was about 2 1/2. She has done really well at staying in her regular bed.

  • With DS, we went straight to a twin and it worked perfectly.

With DD, we took the front off the crib and tried the faux-toddler bed but it was too much freedom for her. The naps ended and she was a cranky mess. We've put the crib back together and will try a twin in a few months.

  • DS was two in May and we just transitioned him last month to a toddler bed. He did great and loves is big boy bed as he calls it. He never tried climb out of is crib and was a good sleeper but we just felt it was time.
  • If we had the space, we would have gone to twin or full straight away. But we don't and our 2 will be sharing a room, and my toddler is on the small to average size, so we went with twin and it has been just fine. Hoping to get at least a year out of it.

  • We moved Nate to a twin at 14 months.  He only slept in the crib for naps though and bedshared with us at night.  We just put it on the floor without the frame.  When we moved he was 25 months and we added the frame, and had a new baby a week later!

  • We are dealing with the same thing except we don't plan on keeping the new baby in with us so DD needs to be out of her crib by February.  We are planning on getting a twin from Ikea and it sits super low to the ground.  I am only worried about her staying in it until she falls asleep.  I've heard it's something you do kind of like potty training, all or nothing.  It's hard to go back once you've switched.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • We switched ds at 18 months to a twin bed, and it was easier that way. I just lay him the "short" way across the bed, and don't even have to put up a rail. Our crib converted, but there was no way I could lay on it to do bedtime routines- reading, cuddles, prayers so we skipped to a twin. GL
