I am in search of success stories. One of my great friends began "leaking" fluid and has been admitted to a perinatal hospital. She is currently 25 weeks (admitted at 24). To make matters worse, she was on vacation (over 1000 miles from home).

Update- She made it to this AM (26w1d), delivering the girls vaginally without meds. Both girls weighed just under 2 lbs. Continued T&P needed. Thank you!!!

Re: Micropreemie Moms (PProm Twins)***UPDATE

I had a micro-preemie at 26w2d.  I had been on hospital bedrest for 24 days when she was born.  On a u/s at 22w6d they discovered that I had really low fluid, but they were never able to detect amniotic fluid.  They think that I had a tear that resealed.  Once I developed an infection, there was no stopping labor and she was born via emergency c/s.  She spent 83 days in the NICU, came home on oxygen, apnea monitor, and a pulse ox, with tons of diagnoses (apnea of prematurity, osteopenia of prematurity, retinopathy of prematurity, anemia of prematurity, CLD, and others that I can't seem to recall).  It was a long road, but my 18-month old preemie has closed the gap on her gross and fine motor skills (she's at the 18-month level), is closing the gap on self-help and cognitive (is at about 15-16 month), but she does seem to have a speech delay.  We get EI (early intervention) every week, and it has helped tremendously with her development.  She's also dropped all of her specialists, except for her cardiologist, who is just way more precautionary than most.

Good luck to your friend and I hope she will be able to hold off infection as long as possible.  The resource blog is a great place to check out.

  • I had a micropreemie; I had spontaneous PTL and DD was born at 23w6d. It was a long road, with three surgeries, and she was in the hospital for 16 weeks and came home on oxygen. She ended up needing some speech therapy until she was 2 1/2, but on Wednesday, she started first grade and, other than some scars and some asthma, there is no evidence she was ever a preemie.

  • Im so sorry to hear what she is going through, especially being so far away from home.

Women can last a suprisingly long time on bedrest after pprom.  I did not experience pprom but was on hospital bedrest before I delivered at 25w 0d and one of the things that we discussed was what would happen if my water broke.  To my surprise they indicated that they would try antibiotics, tocolytics, and fluids for a while before delivering.  The fear obviously is of infection at the point and having enough amniotic fluid for the baby's lungs to continue to mature.

My DD weighed 1lb 7oz at birth and spent 124 days in the NICU.  At nearly 2 she still has delays but nothing that they believe will affect her in the long term.  All of her drs and therapists think that she is still catching up.  Obviously only time will tell but we are amazed by her each and every day.

the resource blog is great.  I also have some other links to helpful websites on my blog... address below.

  • Thank you for the links and blogs. She has been on medication (steroid for the lungs, magnesium drip, medication to stop the contractions, antibiotics etc). The doctors have been constantly monitoring (checking for infections, etc). Her last dilation was 2 cm. The babies are around 1.5 lbs and fluid level has been good.

  • I'm sorry that your friend is going through this. At this point every single day matters and it is great that she's already kept them in for that extra week.

I had severe pre-e and delivered at 27 weeks. DD weighed 1lb 11 oz and was in the NICU for 79 days. We were incredibly lucky and she is absolutely perfect. She has caught up to her actual age and you can't tell that she wasn't born on time.

Lots of good thoughts for your friend.
  • I'm sorry to hear your friend is going through this!  I was admitted at 24w1d with my twins and then made it to 28w4d.  At this point every day and every week is very critical.  The fact that those babies are still inside after a week and she's received steroid is very good.  The preemie resource blog is great.  Hoping she can hold those babies inside as long as possible.
  • Getting through that first week is a BIG deal. Around 50% of pPROM cases will deliver within one week (I was one of those), but once you get beyond the magical threshold of the first week, some people have been able to hang on for weeks and weeks. Fx she's one of those!

  • I had quads at 25 weeks. The first few months are really hard in the NICU. My babies are now 17 months old and have lots of energy chasing each other around all day. :-)

  • I pPROMed at 26w3d and delivered 4days later right at 27w. DD was 1lb14oz. We spent 3 months in the NICU and there were times I just wasnt sure we would ever get out of there. She was having a hard time eating good amounts of food, had high nlood pressure and reflux.
Now she is almost 9 months old and other than her being small, she has no health problems at all. Keep your head up! Thinking about her :)

  • I had my twins at 25 weeks. About an hour after my water broke. So, I didn't get any steroids (which are hugely helpful). We did not have a great outcome but sheisin the right place and every she keeps them in will make a huge difference!
  • I'm late to this party, but I started leaking at 29w2d,and I didn't deliver my twins until 33w4d. It IS possible!!
