Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Bringing baby out?

My daughter is 10 weeks. I bring her for lots of walks and visits to friend's/family homes. I have not yet brought her into a store. She just had her 1st vaccination shots last week. Is anyone else like me? It  probably is ok now to bring her into stores, right?

Re: Bringing baby out?

  • I've taken lil one grocery shopping and he's only 10 days. I wear him in a Moby wrap so no one gets close.

  • I took my first daughter out within a week, in the dead of winter, and she ended up fine.

  • Just be prepared to tell people not to touch her. I found that while most people respect the blanket over the car seat as a signal to leave baby alone, some don't. Older people in particular. I was actually wearing DD2 in the sling at church and an older man (who I didn't know) reached in and touched her head then grazed my boob on the way out. Soo....I guess I'm just saying be prepared to turn away or slap a dudes hand away if you need to. But by all means get out of the house :)

  • I have been out with my LO several times. No one touched him. The Blanket over the car seat is highly respected....although little kids usually want to see the baby and I would let them have a peek...lol! Our little guys just had his second round of shots...so I am much more comfortable going out and letting him look around since he stays awake longer now.... Go get a coffee, shop and have some fun!
  • With my first we went to Walmart when she was 7 days old , with my second I went to the store and the park for a play group at 4 days old . With my third we went to Carter's the days after his birth to get clothes that would fit him since he came earlier then we expected , we went to the store and other places after that . With my fourth we went to the store at 3 days old , church at one week , she's six weeks today and has been to the zoo, park ( several times ) the children's museum , target , Ikea , our outlet mall pretty much everywhere . I keep my kids either in there car seats coverd or in a carrier so there just fine. With three other kids in the middle of summer we can't stay home all the time and for everyone's sanity we need to get out . As long as no ones in her face she's fine .
  • Unless no one is going out and about and then coming back to your house, you can never totally shield her from germs.  Keep her in her car seat or wrap and she'll be totally fine.

  • We've had our nearly term babies in stores a lot! They are 5 weeks old. I think you'll be fine :)

  • I feel the same way and worry about taking LO out I probably won't be going out much until he gets his two month shots. I went to a park recently and someone asked to see him and I politely declined. Because of my profession I've seen some pretty bad stuff, it's just not worth it to me.
  • I brought my LO out a few days after he was born. I let only trusted people old him.
  • You should be fine to take LO out now. Like other PP's, we took our LO out within the first week, and even took her to church at 1 week. She's been perfectly fine and she's 5 weeks now.

  • We've been taking our 34weekers out for a while now. I just don't let anyone touch or hold them. I've actually limited visitors over going to stores bc I know visitors will want to hold them.

  • eh, I have had him out and about, and I did with my first too. You just want to keep people from touching lo. I just keep him in his infant carrier and put a muslin blanket over top to prevent people from feeling the urge to touch him.

Bear took his first trip to WalMart the day after he was born.  Little butt came early and we didn't have diapers or wipes or anything like that for him, so we had to do a run.  Also the car needed an oil change.  Since then he's been out and about almost every day of his life.  He's been to Target too many times to keep track of, many restaurants, summer camp, and gas stations and rest areas in six different states.  It's not flu season where you really have to be careful and he's more likely to catch a disease from DH or I, or the two other kids he lives with, than a stranger walking past you at the mall.

Also, FYI- your baby doesn't have full immunity from most of the shots they get at 2 months.  They can still catch many diseases that are treated in those vaccines until the second or even third rounds of shots*.  So just because they've had round 1 doesn't give them blanket immunity by any means!   Be sure you are using basic common sense to keep your child healthy when out and about.  You don't have to dip them in disinfectant every five seconds, but you make sure you keep your hands clean, clean off any cart of surface you put them on, and avoid having strangers touch their face.  I just know a lot of people get an incorrect sense of security from vaccines and don't take basic precautions!

    *Source from the CDC Website:

Q: Why are so many doses needed for each vaccine?

A: Getting every recommended dose of each vaccine provides your child with the best protection possible. Depending on the vaccine, more than one dose is needed to build high enough immunity to prevent disease, boost immunity that fades over time, make sure people who did not get immunity from a first dose are protected, or protect against germs that change over time, like flu. Every dose of a vaccine is important because they all protect against infectious diseases that are threats today and can be especially serious for infants and very young children.

  • I haven't had issues with strangers touching LO yet. Kept her in a carrier or even her car seat and people would peek, but never came close enough for my "mommy instincts" to kick in.

It's definitely fine! We went out really early, within the first week, I just kept his car seat covered so people couldn't peek in at him or touch him.

Keep covered if you are concerned. We had DS out within the first week too and people would look but never touch. I was ready to stop them if they got too close

  • I haven't really been anywhere because LO has extreme colic and will fuss and cry (all day).. you guys are all lucky. It's been a rough Summer!
