2nd Trimester

Shopping

I posted this in the first trimester board, too, but I'm kind of in no man's land right now (14w, 4d).  When did you / are you going to start shopping for maternity clothes?  I'm fitting in regular clothes still, but stuff feels tight, especially as the day goes on.

Also, where are some good places to shop?  Did you do it online or in store?  I need work clothes and casual clothes.

Re: Shopping

  • I am same as you - 14w5d.  I bought some maternity leggings at motherhood maternity (in person) and a belly band (target) around 8 weeks so that I had some super comfy stuff (highly recommend maternity leggings for around the house wear!!). I just started not fitting in my regular pants this past week, even with the band.  My plan is to rely on my larger dresses and maternity leggings for the next 2-3 weeks until I can hit up the local fall-winter maternity consignment sale (hate the idea of spending a lot of $ on clothes I will only wear a few months).  If I don't have enough after that, I will probably just go to a combo of motherhood maternity, target, kohls and pick up whatever else I need.

  • Thanks for the advice.  The only buy what you can and will wear right away is good advice.  I have to remember I have a constantly changing body, so trying to plan ahead is not going to work.

Right now I can definitely get into old clothes, and they don't look too tight, but after a day of sitting at my desk, they feel a little pinchy.
  • Check your wardrobe for transitional items. I wore lots of "regular" dresses during my last pregnancy and it was fine. I did invest in some tops and jeans though. Check Zulilly.com for their maternity deals, and motherhood.com on their sales. I think a lot of their clothes are really overpriced, and I would never buy maternity clothes at full price. My favorite pants are Jessica Simpson brand over belly maternity skinny leg dark wash jeans. I could live in those things. I am not particularly an advocate of JS, and I would normally never wear skinny jeans, but they are really great. I got them on sale on line. Also, don't wait too long because you don't want to have to rush to the store when you're really pregnant to try on clothes.

    good luck!

  • I found a really good website for maternity clothes: asos.com. It's based in the UK, but ships within 2 weeks, and has FREE shipping and free returns too. Definitely consider ordering 1 size up from what you usually are because the uk sizes are small. They have very cute clothes!
  • I find motherhood overpriced.  We have Thyme maternity around here that's ok, but I only ever buy off the clearance rack or when there is a really good sale.  I refuse to pay more than $30 for a pair of jeans.  I also found some maternity jeans at Target that weren't bad, I think I paid $20 for them.  I am about 40lb lighter than I was with DS, so none of my old maternity clothes fit.

  • I had to buy clothes @ 10 weeks. I had a pooch at 7 weeks. I went straight to maternity pants & tops. My boobs are huge and my belly is not comfortable in my old pants with a belly band.
  • I've bought most clothes at Target or the Motherhood Maternity outlet store-3 dresses for under $5 each! I also ordered leggings from Old Navy-their online selection is much bigger than in store. I found the belly bands really helpful in extending the comfort of prepregnancy pants and keeping the expanding belly pants up before my bu,p grew enough to hold it up.

  • I invested some money into maternity jeans and shorts around week 14 I'm at 18 weeks now and they still fit good. I'm hopeless at bras though I've done grown over a cup size. I'm about to have to go bra shopping yet again. I bought maternity shirts a little bigger than I need right now because my family has been know to go from a barely bump to looks like about to pop overnight. It's up to the mommy to be on what to buy, how much to spend, and how often to buy maternity clothes. If you have family or friends that are around the same size and have maternity clothes trade out things. Saves money and helps out another mommy to be.
  • I'm almost 14 weeks and I'm at that awkward stage where I don't look pregnant but I don't look so thin anymore! I bought one of those belly bands from target a couple weeks ago because while I could still button my jeans, they were so uncomfortable when I sat down or bent over for any reason. So that helped but most days, it more comfortable to just wear yoga pants or jersey skirts.. Anything with a stretchy waistband, that way I can wear them after pregnancy too!

  • I got my pants at Motherhood Maternity because those are things that I prefer to try on. All of my tops I got at Old Navy.

  • I've gotten everything I have from the clearance racks at Motherhood and clearance racks at Target. I had to go to pretty much completely maternity clothes only wardrobe at 12 weeks with this one (my third pregnancy to go past the first 6-8 weeks) so just a warning that going by weeks isn't necessarily going to help. You just kind of have to judge by what is fitting for you at the time, and you will know when you really just have to have maternity. Until then, though, perhaps look into pants with elastic tops, that sort of thing, and definitely the belly band is a good option. Looser fitting longer length shirts also help, or perhaps a scarf around the middle to hide a belly band will work. It depends on what your style is really. For me, it was just easier to go straight from my regular wardrobe into maternity clothes, but I got really tired of wearing nothing but my yoga pants and baggy t-shirts for two solid weeks, and I showed much bigger much sooner than I did with my first two kids.

  • I bought everything I own at Madeleine Maternity, my friend gave me this coupon code ILOVEMM for 50% off and their stuff is adorable. Other than that I bought some leggings at Target and a few larger tops at Zara.
  • I think it depends how much you'll wear something. With my first, I was working, so getting two nice pairs of dress pants was important for me. This time around, I'm a SAHM so investing in a couple of nice pairs of jeans is what's important. I wouldn't go crazy on tops. You might find that some of the tops you have now will work fine with a belly, at least for a while.

I look at Target & ON when they're having sales, but I've found the best deals on local facebook groups for kids items/clothes. Craigslist is a great place to check also. Yesterday I went to a local second-hand store which mainly carries kid's items, but also has a maternity section. I got two gently used pairs of jeans for $14. If you're really budget conscious you can get great stuff second-hand for maternity clothes because some are worn for such a short time.
