Excited vs nesting

A few days ago, I had just finished sewing something for the baby, and DH and I started talking. He asked me if I've started nesting yet - I told him I don't think I'm nesting, but I do feel a bit anxious about not being as prepared as I think I should be by this point. As I'm writing this I'm realizing that I think I actually am nesting lol I'm trying to organize/rearrange/get rid of things, wanting to go out and look at baby stuff to see what we will need, and getting ready to make a bunch of things for LO.

I've been thinking about this since our talk and I was just wondering what you ladies think. At what point does it stop being excitement (not that you really stop being excited about your LO) and turn into nesting?

Re: Excited vs nesting

  • Those last weeks for me. I felt the need to clean, organize, clean, reorganize, clean, and re-reorganize

  • That's how I feel now, which is why I wasn't sure if I was nesting or not because I didn't know if it's too early for that. I think it might be because I live in such a small place with minimal space that is making me feel more anxious about not being prepared enough.

  • Last weekend, I rearranged our bedroom to make space for baby's crib.  I also cleared out our closet and organized it.  Everyone asked me if I was nesting.  I thought it was too early for that, but I guess maybe I am!  :p  I think it's natural to want to be prepared for your little person!

  • I didn't start nesting until 30+ weeks last time. I did get excited and started a lot of craft projects for his room before then though.

  • I have no idea when it becomes nesting, but I hope it kicks in soon for me. :p  I seriously need to start cleaning or organizing or making things or something....

  • I didn't nest at all with my 1st. This time I'm not wanting to clean but I'm wanting to go through of all the old stuff from DS that I won't use or want (even if this is a boy) and trying to organize. I'm sucking on laundry, dishes, and cleaning in general.
  • I don't know what I'm having yet, and we're also moving at the beginning of December, so I haven't started nesting at ALL yet!! But I have been reading, learning, etc. that's fun that you're making things for your baby!!
  • Nesting is an indication of labor being soon usually, around 38-44 weeks;)
For me I knew it was happening because I had been so exhausted and just tired of being pregnant, crying a lot and just ready for labour, and then all of a sudden I wanted to clean and organize everything in sight. My house just wasn't ready yet, clothes had to be refolded a certain way, the floor and baseboard disinfected, furniture rearranged etc. It lasted about 3 days for me, the day I stopped, my water broke at 9pm and I had my son the next morning!
  • I get it right before baby comes. It such a strong urge to seriously clean everything. Lots of scrubbing and vacuuming and major cleaning.
  • I think I'm already there.. I have almost totally cleaned out the closet in the babies' room. We had a yard sale yesterday to get rid of all of our crap and Good Will'ed the rest of it. I told my H that I would get rid of everything in our house if I could... I've started making a mental list of things I want done like, yesterday, in preparation. Ridiculous things though too, like painting my kitchen because I know we're not going to have time once the babies are here.

We just bought a new bed for us today... our last selfish purchase for a while!

  • I don't think I am nesting yet, but just taking advantage of the extra energy while I have it.

  • Does shopping count? My mum told me I was nesting when I was cleaning the kitchen after dinner, that did annoy me actually, because ummm no, that's what normal people do! I agree that there is probably a difference between cleaning/organising/being excited, and that crazy lady cleaning the skirting boards in the baby room for the 10th time nesting haha!

@Stephanie185 - There usually is a second wave of nesting that means baby is coming. But everything I read talks about an earlier round of nesting in 2nd tri. :)  FWIW, I'm still not experiencing it at all and I'm closer to 3rd tri than 1st tri at this point. Eeep.

  • I feel like I'm there but I don't know if it's a good thing - I am mostly stressed about all the things I have to do and already buying things I should probably wait for till after my shower! Oh well, if I get the nursery done early I will be happy so I can just sleep a lot in 3rd trimester lol.

Seriously? Dang I had no idea. Now I feel lazy for not nesting and shit, I should go clean something or organize a drawer somewhere;)
  • I think I have begun nesting. I have been feeling an incredible need to repaint the kids room and my room. I was actually feeling stressed about it. Generally I don't care about things like that so I am pretty sure I am nesting.
  • I haven't really been feeling well to do anything, but I decided that once I felt the need to clear out cupboards, and rearrange stored items, that I was getting a little ridiculous, and also that it was probably nesting.

  • All of you people cleaning out entire rooms amaze me! I renovated my house so I wouldn't have to clean out the spare bedroom because that's the cat's room haha The house needed renovating anyway and it was going to be easier to live with before the baby came anyway, but still it was nice to walk into a perfectly empty, painted bedroom and closet that'll become the nursery!
