CIO Research and Resources

There's been a lot of talk lately about us mamas receiving negative comments and criticism from our parents, inlaws, friends, strangers, and even SOs.

I saw this posted on Facebook and think it's totally relevant. It's an enormous list of resources and good research about CIO and its effect on children. If you're receiving criticism from someone who likes research and statistics, sharing some of these might help them understand why you've chosen not to CIO.

Enjoy snuggling those babies, and remember the research backs you up!

Re: CIO Research and Resources

  • This is great! Thanks!

Also, google ISIS - it's a research project on infant sleep run out of a university in the UK. It has some good resources, but is not super mobile-friendly.

If you want to convince your doctor that sleep training has negative consequences I would not use anything from that site. It promotes fear mongering, has little scientific evidence to support their claims and not a legitimate medical source. If you would like something that might help your cause, look into dr. James mckenna's research at notre dame.

This. Though I looked at the other site mentioned (ISIS) and that was fascinating! I recommend checking that out. But honestly, you aren't going to convince your ped that sleep training is bad. There was a recent study in Pediatrics that found no difference in children who were sleep trained as infants compared to those who weren't. So a doctor is going to promote what they feel gives the family the most rest because sleep-deprived moms are not as functional. I think moms who identify themselves as AP are different because they are actively choosing this lifestyle and feel there are benefits that warrant their efforts. However, I would guess that the average mom is not thinking AP and maybe gets so stressed from lack of sleep to the point that they aren't the best mom they could be. Doctors will consider all of that.

  • Here's an actual study. I personally will not start behavioral sleep interventions til about 6 months and then only if they are needed. Around 6 months behavioral methods can be used so that the infant is sleeping for at least 4 hour stretches of time. This will allow the mother to get adequate rest and as the study points out reduces maternal depression. It does not result in perfect sleep or a 7-8 hour night free of interruptions - that's unrealistic. BTW: the study uses clincally proven behavioral sleep interventions NOT the CIO method. I seriously wonder if other people are actually using CIO or if they are just grouping everything into that category. There is a HUGE difference between the behavioral methods discussed in the attached article and CIO.

  • I agree that drmomma isn't the most reliable source (even when I agree with what she posts).  Evolutionary Parenting has an excellent series on CIO - she does a great job summarizing the research that's out there.  McKenna's site is good as well.

I honestly haven't been overly impressed with McKenna's site, but the Evolutionary Parenting rec is awesome. She does such a great job discussing everything with research in mind, and really seems to have a solid grasp of study design issues. Thanks for sharing!

Agreed! Evolutionary Parenting is where I found the links to ISIS and the peer-reviewed studies. It's great!
