Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Transitioning to whole cow's milk

My DD is 11 months old, and someone recommended introducing whole milk by adding a little bit to their bottle. I've been EPing this whole time and my LO has never had formula. She drinks 5 oz bottles four times a day, along with solids 3 times a day. I've been putting 1 oz of cow's milk and putting 4 oz of BM in her bottles. My friend said to do this for one week, and if she does fine, then increase the cow's milk by 1 oz each week. It's been a couple days now and she seems to be doing fine. Except she's way more gassy! Her poop is pretty much the same.

Anyone else introducing whole cow's milk to their LO? How's it going?

  • I'm no help here because we haven't started to introduce it to DD yet. Starting in a few days. I'll be watching this post hoping to learn how as well. Sorry I couldn't help!

  • When we transitioned DS to milk he was a little gassy and his poops changed for a bit but eventually he adjusted. I think that's pretty normal.

  • My pedi gave me the okay to give him an ounce or two of WCM at 9months.  We've either given it to him straight in a bottle or mixed it with BM.  Either way he is fine with it but we have no food allergies in our families.  What you're doing sounds fine.  I think that is the way I will be weaning when LO hits 11months so by the time he is 12months, I would have stopped pumping.

  • What I've been told by doctors and lactation consultants is to not introduce cows milk prior to the 1st birthday.  Babies cannot digest it properly until then.

I get what you're saying, but it's not like they magically change they're digestion on they're first birthday. Unless they are lactose intolerant, introducing it earlier than a year is fine. The main reason to hold off is just because formula/breast milk is richer in nutrients than cow's milk.

I know their digestion doesn't magically change on that day, some kids may be earlier, some later.  However, that's the guideline I've received from several medical professionals as well as my personal research so that's what I'm going with.
  • I have never mixed the two, but I don't see why it would be a problem. As long as the gas is not too bothersome I would continue to increase it. If it becomes very painful do not increase, if it continues talk to your doctor. I was not able to keep up pumping milk at 11 months and started whole milk. Both of my children are perfectly healthy.
  • I also just gave it to her straight without mixing.  She did fine.  I think you have to take in to account all the other things your LO is eating at the time.  if they are strictly on purees and puffs, it's different than if they are already eating table food.  My LO was eating chicken fajita with us at dinner time and not having a problem, I didn't think that WCM was going to be an issue, and it wasn't.
