Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Day and night confusion?

My baby is 2 weeks old almost three and I think she has her days and nights mixed up. Like the other night she went to sleep about ten woke up at like eleven then fell back asleep till two then slept till four then I put her back to sleep at five fifteen then she woke up again at six then went back to sleep at eight thirty slept till ten thirty. Then she woke up and was up till like twelve thirty slept for an hour I think then was up till three thirty then she slept for a few hours till I wanna say seven or eight. She does sleep in a bassinet and we don't swaddle her anymore and at night she hits the sides with her hands and idk if when she hits it it wakes her?. If anyone has any advice that would be great.

  • I would suggest swaddling her, that helped my baby sleep up until about 2 1/2 months. Besides that is normal for babies to wake up all night. I know it's super exhausting though! Keep in bright in the day time and maybe get her outside a bit in the sun light, she will figure it out eventually.

  • That sounds normal for a newborn.  Like a PP said, they don't start longer stretches of 'night time' sleeping for at least another 3-4 weeks; at about 5-6 weeks you might start to get 4-5 hour stretches out of your LO during the first half of their night time sleep.

What we've always done with LO is take her on a walk around 3-5 in the afternoon, to expose her to daylight, which help regulates some of that rhythm. We've also always put her down the same way for her first stretch of "night time" sleep, which was swaddle, bottle and rocking.  We did this routine every day around 7-8 pm and slowly that first stretch began to lengthen until she STTN. We always kept wake ups to the basics at night-feeding, and diaper change when necessary (After 6 weeks we stopped changing night time diapers when she woke up-they didn't bother her and her skin was a little less sensitive. we did put diaper cream on before her last diaper of the day. we always changed a BM no matter what though) in a dark room, with no eye contact or sound. This made night time boring, and she only woke up to feed after 2 weeks.

  • as far as naps we've never done the "keep it loud, bright, and noisy" because at about 6 weeks she stopped being able to nap in bright rooms and light was bothering her, so normally she sleeps with blackout shades. that being said, she's been giving us 5-6 hours stretches since 4 weeks, 8 hours by 6 weeks, and since 8 weeks she's slept 7-630 pretty regularly with a few hiccups.  some babies can sleep WELL regardless of noise/sound level but some babies can't. personally, i can't nap in the day because sunlight bothers me so I don't expect my baby too if it's hard for her
