Vent - excess lipase.. :(

I've been pumping to have a freezer stash of BM for work and I found out yesterday that my milk has excess lipase... I tried some of the frozen milk and it tastes like liquid dish soap. It's horrible.... I have a 50 oz. of horrible tasting BM :(.

Now I have to begin pumping a new freezer stash of milk which needs to be scalded first to try to stop the enzymes from making it taste terrible... Grrrrr....

  • That bites!  Makes me think I should sample a random bag ... because I've probably got something like 200oz in the freezer at this point!

  • Yeah I read about it and got curious... That's why I tried mine.

I tried my fresh milk and it was sweet...
It tasted so much better then the frozen stuff.

But at least I found out with enough time to pump a better tasting stash. (hopefully- I still have to test the scalded milk to see if it tastes better.. )
  • I don't think he'll take it... Let's just say you couldn't pay me to drink it.. But you're right that it is nutritionally sound... I boxed it up in the freezer as emergency back up milk. I figure I can try to mix it with good tasting milk or formula if LO won't drink it. But honestly it taste so bad I wouldn't even want to give it to him. Yuck :-L

Did you see if your baby would take the frozen milk? Some will and some wont but it wouldnt hurt to try since the milk isnt bad, just tastes off.
This - don't lose hope already!
  • I also have excess lipase, in my case my frozen milk gets a metallic taste and my refrigerated milk gets a soapy taste after 3 days. I gave the frozen milk to my LO without realizing it was like that and she drank it no problem. I also felt the same way about not wanting to give it to her so I mix it with fresh milk. It stinks though to have one more thing to deal with
