Talking and first words

When does talking normally occur?? My boyfriends little cousin is 6months and says dada, mama and nana. I thought this was really early for a baby to start talking. DD is going to be 9 months at the beginning of September and she isnt talking yet. I know all babies areddifferent and develop at their own pace. But DD was 3 months early and these kinds of things worry me. She babbles and cooes. I try helping her say stuff, and she laughs and engages so I dont think there is a problem. But I just wanted to see what other moms have experienced.

    Does your little cousin say those words with actual intention? DS will occasionally hit on a word like mama or dada while babbling, but he clearly doesn't mean anything by it. I think a lot of parents say that their child is saying "mama" when s/he is really just babbling.

    My DD says dada and she knows what she is saying, she'll be looking right at him when she says it. She says baba and lala but of course that's just babble. She has yet to say mama, she only started saying it when we started saying it to her. and pointing to who was which.

    I agree with this - DD has been saying "mamamamama" for months, but the first time I really thought it had intention was 2 days ago.  She was crawling around after me in the kitchen, whining and looking up at me going "mamaaaaa... mamaaaaa..." and wanted to be picked up.  I'm still not 100% convinced she "said" it, but it was by far the most purposeful I've heard it so far.  That said, she hasn't said mama since :)

    She also does baba, dada, gaga - all with no intention.  I thought I read that real "first words" weren't supposed to be until closer to a year?

    That I'm not sure. It was just on his mom's fb the other day and it got me wondering.

    I definitely wouldn't worry at this point.  My DS is now 2 and wasn't talking at 9 months (no words at all) but now he literally talks up a storm and is saying more words together than most his age. You are right all babies develop at different pace but I know it is so easy to compare, I do it all the time!

    DS says mama a lot, mostly I think because he likes how it sounds/feels. He started that a little after 6 mo. but I don't think he connects it with me yet. He also says baba and papa, but he's just making sounds. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if you think it's a problem just ask your pedi at your next visit.
