Nursing shirts?

Hi Ladies,
Just wanted opinions on nursing shirts. I plan on breastfeeding, but as a FTM I'm confused as to wether I really need nursing shirts or not? I like how they are practical, I just don't like the price. I've also just recently seen a shirt that you put under your regular shirt so when you pull it up to nurse your stomach isn't exposed. Has anyone tried those before? Thank you!!

Re: Nursing shirts?

  • I found nursing shirts to be a waste for me. I felt like my boobs were always hangin out in them or I was always having to adjust them so I felt comfortable. I much preferred my pre-preg clothes. It is way easier just to pull my shirt up or unbotton and button down shirt. Everyone is different though that is just what I noticed. I did see that target has been making some combination maternity and nursing tops then you can get a little more wear out of them.

  • I used a lot of seamless camisoles. It was just easier.

Also I'm pretty small and have a large bust, so nursing tanks don't offer enough support.

  • I'm planning on nursing tanks and bras for now and then if I need them, I'll get some nursing shirts when I go back to work.

FWIW, for those of you who have issues with unsupportive nursing tanks, check out Undercover Mamas. https://undercovermama.com/

They clip to your nursing bras instead of being a full second layer and I know a lot of large busted ladies had good luck with them.

  • I'm a ftm so I'm not sure how well this plan will work.. But I was thinking of just getting some ribbed tank tops to wear under my regular shirts so when I pull my regular shirt up my belly isn't hanging out.
  • In my experience, there is no such thing as a cute nursing shirt. I wear a normal bra with a nursing tank and shirt over it. Some bras work better than others, and there are some nice nursing bras. Basically, if you can whip a boob out in it, it'll work for breastfeeding. Low-cut, stretchy shirts can be pulled down. I preferred using an udder cover, just so I wouldn't need to worry about any unintentional exposing/scarring for life. ;)

  • I bought all sorts of nursing clothes with DD1, but what I ended up liking the most were the stretchy pull-down nursing shirts and the pull-down nursing bra styles. I was never a fan of the clicky nursing bra-- it was hard to work it one handed and the clicky woke up DD if she fell asleep.

With one hand, I could quickly and easily pull down both my shirt and bra on one side for nursing. I'll buy some more of these shirts this time.
  • I've nursed my 2 girls for about 40 months and own 1 nursing shirt that my mother bought me and I have worn it twice.  I'd buy one or two if you want and see what you think.

The nursing tank tops from target (prefer, they are longer) and walmart worked well for me then I'd throw my normal t-shirts over them or at home I'd throw a fleece or flannelish button up shirt over (had both girls in cold weather).  For work I had some medela nursing bras that my freestyle would hook to to be hands free but as soon as I got home on went a tank.  FWIW I was a 32B before pregnancies would get up to 32 DDs the first 1-5 months of nursing then by 13ish months after each was likely 32Aish still nursing.  Oh, and I was uneven so the nursing bras were stretchy and the tanks were accommodating.

  • I've seen very affordable (and comfortable ones) at Target.

I got some from hotmilk that offer amazing support!!

I plan on using nursing tanks in the beginning fescues I'll be home and really don't care how I look. For more support when I go to work I'll get a nursing bra and probably emwear a lot if button up shirts so I can pump. As baby and I venture out I plan on wearing tops I can just lift while using a nursing cover.

I loved nursing tanks!!! I would just wear the tank and no bra. It was so easy to whip out and kept exposure to a minimum. I used the target one and these were pretty cheap, fell apart quickly and were really short. I switched to glamour moms and those had better support, thicker material and cuter styles. I will also plan on getting a couple bravado ones. I have some friends that swear by those. You soooo don't want to have to unbutton or lift up your whole shirt to nurse (and expose that sexy loose tummy). , it's so much easier to quickly and less conspicuously whip it out with a nursing tanks.

  • I nursed my first for a year and I got by with next to no nursing clothes. That being said, this time I'm splurging a bit and buying myself some things because there's a lot about breast feeding that can be cumbersome and inconvenient and I want to be comfortable and at ease. If you've never nursed before I wouldn't spend a lot before you have baby, wait and see what you think will make it easiest for you. Also please note that when I say cumbersome and inconvenient I'm talking about pumping...nursing itself is about as convenient as it gets.
  • I'm a STM and agree with other posters. I wouldn't spend too much on nursing clothes. I think 99% of nursing shirts are hideous and "obvious". With DS1 I wore nursing tanks from Target, loved them! That was 4 yrs ago and they held up well, I plan on using them again. I may have to buy a few in a larger size, the tatas seem bigger this time. I liked the tanks b/c I didn't have to wear a bra. And they were great to sleep in as they gave my milk jugs some support but were comfy ;)
