New blood work to find out sex of baby?

When I went to my OBs office the other day, he told me about this new kind of test they recently came out with that basically omits the need for amniocentesis for finding out issues and instead they just take your blood at 10 weeks. He also mentioned they could find out the sex of the baby too. Has anyone else heard of this? It kind of freaks me out. Not the finding out genetics part but the sex part.

  • It tests for Y chromosomes. If they're there, baby is a boy.

  • Yes it is the maternal 21 test. Due to my age I will be having it at 10 weeks so we should know the sex by 12 weeks as it takes two weeks for results.
  • That'd be nice. I doubt it's offered for just anyone though!

My doctor offered it to me. I'm not sure if it's because I'm PGaL though.

Anyone can get it however usually insurance will only pay for it if you are AMA. I would check as it is not cheap.
  • I had an ectopic mc before DS (sooo over 8 years ago) and no losses since except chemicals. I don't add myself to the PGaL group for this reason, but possibly that's why you were offered it. I'd take it!

AMA? I'm going back to NC before my 10 week mark so I'm not getting it done and I highly doubt the Dr's on post offer it. I just thought it was kind of cool.

My midwife offered it to me as well and I have no "risk factors" other than a loss at 5 1/2 weeks 2 pregnancies ago. I turned it down, but I think they are offering it freely now.

  • MaterniT21 isn't the only one. I think there are three. They all do the same thing, they're just manufactured and marketed by different companies.

I know AMA is 35 and up.  Do you know when AMA is calculated?  In other words, when  you find out your pregnant, when you get the testing or when you deliver?  I'm wondering b/c I'll be 35 in Nov. and not sure if that would put me in the AMA category.

I recently heard about this from a friend. She sent me this article, check it out: https://www.parents.com/blogs/parents-news-now/2011/08/10/pregnancy/new-blood-test-can-tell-fetal-gender-at-7-weeks/

ETA: The second link didn't work, so I removed it.
  • The other one is the panorama. FTM and FTP, but I still plan to ask dr about it at my appt Tues. Even if insurance only covers part, it'd still be worth looking into since its noninvasive!
  • Science is cool!  Though I'm one of those crazies who is waiting to find out the sex until this LO exits the womb. :)
