Pregnancy Asthma anyone?

I am an occasional asthma sufferer however during my pregnancy, particularly the last couple of weeks it has gotten a lot worse. I am booked in to see my midwife to discuss further and I will probably visit my doctor or afterhours in the next couple of days too as I feel like my inhaler only helps for a short while.

Does anyone here have experience with this or something similar? It is scary not feeling like I can breath more and more frequently and Dr Google is NOT my friend lol

Re: Pregnancy Asthma anyone?

  • I have asthma and I take daily my Advair disk and it seems to help as a preventative and I use my Proventil inhaler as needed. I have noticed that I need it more during pregnancy.

  • This week has been kind of rough for me, too.

There are two things that might be going on.

    1) It's not entirely asthma.  Your blood volume is up, which places extra demands on the lungs, and the baby is maybe beginning to press up against the diaphragm.  These all make normal pregnant women feel short of breath sometimes.  If there isn't really any tightness or coughing, this might be the problem.

    2) Your asthma actually is flaring a bit.  This is manageable, but get on top of it as fast as you can.  You may need a higher dose of inhaled steroid.

Also, if you are getting acid reflux, that can worsen asthma.  Might need to sleep with your head elevated, or take other steps to reduce reflux.

  • My asthma has gotten worse since I became pregnant. Do you currently take a controller medication or just a rescue one? My asthma dr has me taking pulmicort which according to him is class B plus albuterol as needed. I was told though to make sure I came back and he would change meds if I was having problems.

  • I dont have asthma, but I've noticed that breathing is definitely labored at times, especially at night right when I'm laying down for bed. But i think mild breathing issues are normal because of the hormones and different changes going on.

  • I have asthma.. I take my controller inhaler everyday and my rescue as needed. I also limit my activity. This is something you need to be on top of, so I would talk to a doctor soon.

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies. At the moment I only have a rescue inhaler, I think something to help control it would be really beneficial.
