Four lbs in one week!

I'm only eight weeks and in one week alone, I gained four lbs!  It's nuts!  I work out five days a week too, but I just can't stop eating (and not all of my choices have been the healthiest), but still.  I have a belly too now and even DH asked me last night if I think I'm eating too much :)

Re: Four lbs in one week!

  • I went from 124 to 127-8 during my first pregnancy (which only lasted 8 weeks) and worked out 5-6 days a week.  I didn't eat THAT much more.  Maybe some extra avocado toast in the morning.  However, I think it was mainly water weight and bloat.  You find yourself drinking a lot more water as well?   I was down to 124 again before getting knocked up this time.

  • You have no control over how much you gain.  Don't worry about your weight during pregnancy, just keep exercising and eating as best as you can.  That's really all you can do.  I had to buy maternity shorts only 2 months into my pregnancy when most people didn't have to until 6 months. you can't control the hunger because you have to eat.  That was the most annoying part for me, having to eat 6 meals a day.  I felt my life revolved around my meals.

  • It happens. I too thought it was crazy that despite not too much change in diet and staying active that the same thing would happen. The body will hold onto and gain what it needs. With both of my pregnancies I gained the bulk of my weight in 2nd tri and then the last 1-2 months stopped gaining any more. So don't stress. It will slow down and you will lose it all afterwards too if you try to keep up all your healthy habits. I gained 40lbs with my 1st and lost it all in 2.5 months. Have gained 28lbs this pregnancy and due tomorrow so we will see.

Also, 1st tri is about survival..you will feel more like eating normal in the second trip.
  • If it helps, I gained more weight in the first tri than I did in either of the other two. I haven't gained in the last 3 weeks and I'm at 38 weeks tomorrow. I held onto a lot of water weight initially and I was also SO hungry in my first trimester. My appetite and food choices normalized in the second trimester I'm still at the low end of the range my doctor gave me for gaining, so it all evened out! Try to make the best choices you can since you are very hungry, and forgive yourself for splurging a little...just try not to overdo it. :)

You'll thank yourself for staying active throughout your pregnancy! It has really helped with my energy throughout! I was running up until 37 weeks and I'm still weight lifting, walking, and doing the elliptical 7 days a week. It makes a HUGE difference! Congratulations and best of luck!

  • I gained about 10 pounds in the first tri then it scene out in the second. For me it comes in spurts. I'm now almost 28weeks and 23 pounds. You are going to be way more hungry. I can eat way more than my husband now and still be hungry! Good luck and congrats.
  • Well, I suppose it's better to be hungry then nauseas all the time. Unfortunately you may go through that so don't worry about those lbs. Morning sickness could have you staying far away from all food in the next few weeks.

  • Your body will gain what it needs, try to make healthy choices and don't worry.  In all 3 of my pg's I've lost weight for the first 16-18 weeks (no m/s, some aversions, but it's just how my body reacts).  With my first pg I gained 25 pounds above pp weight (so the weight I lost plus 25 pounds).  During my 2nd pg (twins) I gained 48 pounds.  This past pg I carried to 41w, had a 9lb 10oz baby, ate a lot more chocolate than with my other pg's and I gained 18 pounds.  Just goes to show that every pg is different and pg weight isn't just based on your diet and exercise.  I was actually smaller with my twins until 13ish weeks than my singleton pg.  With my 3rd pg I was in maternity bottoms almost right after I found out I was pg (gained quite a bit of weight from the IF drugs and after your first pg you show faster because your muscles aren't as tight as they once were.
