Trying to Get Pregnant

Wisdom teeth...

3 of them are coming out tomorrow, and a broken moler. I'm nervous because I am worried about the pain. Anyone have any wisdom teeth stories that could put my mind at ease? How long did it take you to heal/ feel normal? My 5 year old starts kindergarten next Wednesday!

Re: Wisdom teeth...

  • Nice! I will definitely be using the Vicodin
  • I had all 4 removed in 2003 I suggest take the pain meds and have soft foods just as broths, mashed potatoes etc around the house. The worst part for me was the swelling and bruising I looked like a chipmunk for a good week but mine were impacted

  • I didn't have any wisdom teeth extracted but DH did a couple of years ago. He used Vicodin but it made him feel woozy so he just stuck it out with Advil. What a trooper. He healed pretty quick and was eating solids after 3 days.
  • I had mine out in high school.  Went nice and smooth.  I felt normal again in about 3-5 days, but my mouth was still uncomfortable for a week after that.

  • I got all 4 of mine out in December. The worst part I can remember is being dizzy waking up.

I didn't feel a lot of pain. I only took the Vicodin the first two days, and switched over to the ibuprofen they prescribed until it ran out.

I think the part I hated the most was not being able to eat real food for awhile. You have to be really careful not to get anything stuck in those holes while they are healing.

I think I felt normal again after a few weeks. Overall, it was not a bad experience.

I'm sure you'll be fine :) Good luck!
  • I had all four out in college. They put me under and gave me Vicodin. It was not nearly as bad as I had anticipated. I slept and rested for a few days but only needed the drugs for one. And I'm a huge baby! Good luck to you!

  • I had mine taken out 20 yrs ago (gawd, I feel old). I don't remember much except my cheeks swelled up for a few days. Oh, and I got to eat a lot of frozen yogurt which I loved. Good luck!

  • My wisdom teeth story is absolutely horrifying, but I went to a horrific dentist that was full of shady practices and has since been shut down due to said practices.

I know this doesn't seem reassuring, but I tell people this so they can know that the experience they are scared of having is really rare and usually only happens when terrible dentists are involved. If you trust your dentist and know you will be getting decent anesthetic (which I was denied) you will be fine. 99% of the stories I hear after sharing mine are positive.

  • I had 2 of mine taken out years ago. My dentist did it under novicaine only. He was explaining what he was doing and before he could finish talking the one was out.

I had soup and grill cheese that evening. No pain at all. I never took anything.

However mine were not impacted. Just wanted them out.

I do have to get my upper right one out but have to go to the specialist since it is close to my sinuses. Was suppose to do that this summer. Did not happen since I hurt my back.

    Good luck!!! Keep us posted.

Always good to have Vicodin on hand just in case.

  • I had mine taken out in high school.  They were impacted and I really had a lot of fear and anxiety about the surgery.  Honestly, it wasn't nearly as bad as I anticipated and believe me I am a big baby when it comes to pain.  I think I took the prescribed pain killers for a day or two and by the end of the week I was back to eating like I normally did.  Good luck and keep us posted.

  • I had all four out when I was 25. Two were impacted, all were deep. I was under general and the procedure took almost 2 hours.

My recovery was not great. I got very ill the day after surgery (likely from taking meds on a near empty stomach) and throwing up + holes in your mouth = no fun. It was the sickest I've ever been. I was feeling much better by day 4.

My advice is make sure you have something in your stomach and prepare on the couch for a couple of days!

I had one wisdom tooth removed 4 years ago because it started to grow in and was pretty painful. Of course, that was during a short stint of time when I didn't have dental insurance, so I had to pay $800 out of pocket for just one tooth. Then last year I had the other three removed just to get it over with. Either time wasn't too bad for me, but I had to use hydrocodone both times for the pain, and I remember having to sleep a lot because I do not do well on hydro! It seemed like I did better initially, but about 3 days after surgery my face swelled so much my cheeks were almost brusing. That was the worst/most painful part for me, but it's different for everyone. Hoping it goes well for you and you heal quickly!

  • From what I understand, everyone reacts differently but I ended up wishing I had done it sooner.

I had 3 taken out- 2 were erupting out of the sides of my gums because they were impacted. My dentist used to be an oral surgeon so I had him take them out with nitrous and local as I don't react well to anesthesia. It wasn't the easiest removal but it wasn't a bad experience. I did not need the Vicodin. I developed a dry socket in my lower jaw 3 days later and it was the only pain I was in but a few Ibuprofen took the edge off until it healed (12-24 hours later).

I was back at work after 3 days and traveled for work 5 days after my removal.
  • Honestly, I have fond memories of getting mine out at 20. I was asleep for the operation (all four were impacted & came out at once). Then I woke up, got lots of assistance to the car & then to my bed, and spent the next couple of days eating ice cream, smoothies & watching Sex and the City all while high as a kite. It was great! Although after 2-3 days, I was definitely sick of the Vicodin but at that point you don't need it anymore. I'm getting a dental implant at some point in the near future (depending on how it jibes with pregnancy) and I'm kind of looking forward to the few days after when I'll be at home with my soft foods & bad TV & Vicodin. As an adult, you don't get that many free passes to do stuff like that.

  • Thank you ladies, you are putting my mind at ease. DH is on his way to he pharmacy and Jamba Juice so I can spoon my smoothie. So far the only pain I have is a little jaw pain where the sideways wisdom tooth was growing.
  • I had all 4 of mine out a few years back. Took that vicodin and it was fan-fucking-tastic. I remember walking in and being guided to the dentist chair, the dental hygienist took my shoes off and I was all "ohhh that's so nice of you, thaaanks". The dentist gave me laughing gas and told me to count back from 10, I think I got to "Teee..." before I was out.

No pain or swelling for me, though I did lose feeling in the left side of my tongue for a year or two. Meh, it went away.

  • I had my wisdom teeth out today too!  3 out of the 4 were impacted. I opted for the IV sedation.  All I remember is them telling me they started the meds and they were starting to work.  I'm sure it was 3 seconds later and I was out cold.    I'm still a little numb but not in pain.  Ask me tomorrow how I feel.  I'm currently surrounded by meds:  Vicodin, Medrol Dose pack, Amoxicillin, and a Peridex mouth rinse.

  • Got my 2 bottom ones out last year. This surgery was how I found out I react heavily to anesthesia cause they couldn't wake me up for like a half hour after they stopped it. I had to be taken out to the car in a wheelchair and don't remember the drive home at all. I was a freaking baby.

DH would pull out my bloody, drool-y gauze while I cried cause it hurt so bad (I also bled for a long time afterwards) and he'd pack new gauze in and tell me to go back to sleep. My cheeks didn't swell too bad though so that's good. I only needed like 2 of the Vicodin cause I just dealt with the pain.

The worst part was the gaping holes in my gums that were left for a few weeks afterward. They give you a syringe you fill with water and squeeze into the holes to flush out the excess food that gets stuck in there, and believe me it gets stuck. This is something you do NOT want to forget to do before bed.

I also got sick of the liquid and mushy diet real quick. My first real meal was a week afterwards at a local breakfast cafe, their homemade French toast. It was the best meal ever.

Best news ever- my top left wisdom tooth is making its descent, and those mother fuckers couldn't just take it out with the others so I might have to do it all over again. JOY
  • @islandmommy81 the numbness is slowly going away. The only pain I have is jaw pain on the side where 1 tooth was impacted. It only hurts when I eat. (All I've had is jello). We'll see how it feels once not numb anymore.

Mine were impacted also. I had all 4 taken out under general anesthesia by an oral surgeon. All I needed was ibuprofen because I wasn't that painful and it's supposed to help with inflammation. I are soft foods for the first couple days and then could eat normally after that. My jaw was sore for about a week but I also have TMJD.
TMJ is the worst. @Bree8485 have you tried massage therapy. Years ago I had 8 sessions over 4 months, it hurt like a bitch but it was so worth it. Between this and changes in my snack foods my jaw is so much better.

@Valie18 I'll have to try that.  I try not to chew gum anymore and that seems to help.  Sometimes I'll use warm compresses if it's really bothering me.  I'm all about trying some massage therapy though.  Did you go to a regular massage therapist?
My massage therapist had taken a course specifically for treating TMJ. It was a little difficult finding someone but my Mom's friend is a massage therapist and was able to get me her contact information.

Try to get a prescription from your dentist. Insurance covered most of my sessions.

  • I had all 4 of mine removed about 20 years ago. Not one problem I didn't even take pain meds but mine weren't impacted they just did it in the office.

My son just had his removed he had to have oral surgery because his were impacted. He did fine never took pain meds either.

    Good luck!
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I had two wisdom teeth removed and it was a piece of cake. I think I took a nap, used some ibuprofen, and then went with my dad to look at office buildings.  I don't even think they gave me a prescription for anything.
