Baptism questions

LO is being baptized in a couple of weeks. I was raised Catholic and my husband is Catholic but I have not practiced in a long time and just started going back to church the last couple of months.  I have only been to one baptism in my life and it was also a long time ago.

We have sent word of mouth to family and friends and about 25 people said they want to come. We are having a dinner afterwards at a restaurant (my house is a mess).   Other than that I don't have the first idea what is expected or what I am supposed to do. I know to get a cake. Do we give gifts to the God Parents? I have a little white outfit for LO. Does he need anything else? Since its at a restaurant, we do not need to decorate or anything right?

Thanks,
Clueless

Re: Baptism questions

  • Congratulations! We did not get gifts for the godparents, but we did hand the priest a thank you card with some cash. Otherwise, yes, some fancy outfits, cake and food are in order. Can't think of anything else at the moment.

  • Not Catholic but we did white outfit, restaurant and that was it. I put all my effort into finding an outfit that made me look less fat. We didn't do godparents though.

My son was baptized in a gown that was over a hundred years old that my grandfather wore and all of use grand kids wore too! Amazing! As far as god parents gifts, I don't think you need to do anything....at least I didn't Oppps maybe? We also had a party afterwards at an Italian restaurant and I got a cake and wine and beer for people.  That's about it.

  • My son is being baptized Sunday. We are having a catered party afterwards at my dad's social club for about 40 people. I ordered a cake and cookie tray, and my sisters and I are baking. I'm not giving the Godparents a gift, but we will give a gift to the priest/church.

Amazon has christening outfits, that is where I got his.

  • Just had our LO baptized last Sunday. If you are baptizing Catholic double check with the church if you need to bring anything special. Every parish is different. We could bring our own white garment (bib). Also keep in mind baby will need oil placed on upper part of chest so make sure you can get to it or practicing finding a way. We didn't do gifts. I did spoil ourselves by hiring a local starting photographer to. Photograph the ceremony and after. Best idea ever. She gave me a discounted rate because she is using it in her portfolio.

  • We baptized both in the catholic church. Our Deacon performed both and each time we got him some chocolates(he loves it) and some cash. We got the god parents gifts both times. We had a lunch or dinner and cake after at our house
  • We are having ours today actually! We were asked to attend a baptism prep class as well which answered all these questions. Was also a nice way to meet a few other couples at our parish which was nice!

Our LO was baptized two weeks ago. We didn't do gifts. Both of my LO's wore the same pretty gown (from Macy's ). We did a brunch afterwords at my inlaws.

  • We are having ours Nov 2. I'm excited. The pastor is doing it at the headwaters of a river I live by. It's spring fed and crystal clear. Absolutely beautiful setting. We are also going to sprinkle rose petals in the river in memory of DHs parents. The river signifies life the pastor explained. We will probably get gifts for the godparents.

Then it's cake and a cookout at our house! We will start the smoker before the event lol.

  • We did ours when DS was barely 6 weeks old. I had massive complications and both DS and I were touch and go so my uber catholic European family wanted it done ASAP. I bought a very light white cotton christening onesie I found at Belk. It was July in NC so I wasn't going to make him sweat to death. Plus the family one was way too big on him. The church had a required parents class and the priest was soooo nice and things were a lot more laid back than I remember. After the ceremony I just had friends and family over and we cooked out. I didn't get a gift at the time for the god parents but after I sent them a framed picture of them with DS at the ceremony.

G will be wearing his great grandfather's gown, who he is named after. I love the traditional things like this!

But, that Etsy outfit is so cute, I might get one for him to wear after. :-P

I don't plan to do gifts. Just a tip for the priest/parish, and food/cake/drinks afterwards.
