Are all of you seeing an MFM as well as your regular OB? I've asked a couple different docs in my practice and they all don't seem to think it's necessary, but here I am on bed rest with a short cervix while carrying twins. I think this is exactly what a MFM is for. Maybe I'm wrong?

Thanks Wallace! We are having fraternal b/g twins. I've sent another email to primary OB. Also, getting a bit frustrated because I haven't been able to see him much. Large practice (10 docs) and since the problems in the last 2 weeks I have seen a midwife and 3 docs (not one of which was him).

I only had a 1st trimester consult with MFM. We had mono-di twins, ended up on bed rest, and the closest NICU (also where MFM is located) is 1.5hrs away. After the consult my midwives would send copies of my appointment records and u/s to MFM so I wouldn't have to drive down. If MFM had something to add to the midwives' instructions they'd call me.

Congratulations on your twins! I'm not pregnant with twins but due to previous PTB and current PTL scares, I do not see a separate OB, my MFM is my OB.

With a short cervix, I would see an MFM, even if it's just for a consult.

This. My MFM said he believes anyone expecting twins should have a consult.

No experience with twins but my MFM has states that unless your OB says your "high risk" your generally dont see them. Twins, singletons or whatever. Some people just get lucky with twins or more their pregnancy is perfect.

My OB follows my issues like preterm labor and monitoring my cervix. My MFM does not check any of that. They monitor the babies progress. I'm carrying high risk mo/di twins that started showing signs of twin to twin syndrome at 22 weeks and other potential complications. Also, how far along are you? I didn't start seeing MFM until around 20 weeks. Every practice is different.

OB= monitoring mom

MFM/Perinatologist= specialist for babies.

Has your OB found any potential complications with your babies?

Thanks all! I'm 20w5d. You'd think with all the time I have now I could figure out how to fix my siggy. Heard from my doc this afternoon. We are going to do a consult with MFM. We are also going to come up with a schedule so that I see 2-3 of the docs in the practice vs 10 plus midwives. Again, I appreciate the responses!

I see both. Im having fraternal didi twins. In the beginning I saw my ob and mfm once a mth. Then when my cervix starting shortening ive saw mfm weekly and ob every 2 wks. They explained to me that my ob monitors my urine samples bp and weight etc bc they will deliver. And that mfm monitors the babies and my cervix. Im an hr away from both so I try and schedule them on the same day.

If you have a short cervix, ask about a cerclage.

I only have one baby but I'm just seeing my OB. I did see MFM with my previous pregnancy but by the time we knew there was a problem delivery was pretty imminent.

I started this pregnancy by seeing MFM drs. I just went from the fertility clinic to the MFMs at 6 weeks.

But I was high-risk with my 1st pregnancy and I am 39, so advanced maternal age.

I just called the MFM office, explained that I was 39, with IVF baby and had a pre-term baby last pregnancy and I got scheduled right in. Never even saw my regular OB.

I've been seeing a MFM since we find out we were having twins at around 10 weeks. Mine are identical though. We were seeing my OB once a month and my MFM every two weeks. I also have a short cervix and on bed rest so now I go to both my OB and MFM once a week to check my cervix, fluids and to see if I'm having contractions.
