XP: when to ditch the straw sippy cup

When did you phase out sippy cups? (XP on preschool board)

My 3 year old still primarily uses a straw sippy cup. He uses one for water during the day and one for milk at meals. If I give him juice, it is usually in an open cup. He can easily drink from an open cup, but he tends to play with the liquid. And if he is drinking from an open cup, then his younger brother wants to too.

I don't know, I'm thinking school-age?  DD can drink out of a regular cup too, I just hate the mess. She always turns it into a science experiment.

  • Yes! My son wants to mix it with his food and 'cook'.
  • DS uses an open cup at the table (or with just water) at 2 1/2 but still use straws for on-the-move. I don't really see much of a need to ditch them completely. I still drink out of cups with straws sometimes! :)
  • We ditched them at 3. She was gnawing on her straws and ruining them. DH got fed up replacing them all the time. She uses either an open cup or her Contigo Trekker cups now. I love her Trekker cups!!

  • My older daughter's daycare stopped using them around 18 months, so we did too. DD2 has used a regular cup since she was about 2. They both still use water bottles or straw cups in the car, but not at home or in restaurants.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • At a house, daycare or restauarant he always uses an open top cup.  He has insulated cups that are straw or open mouth bottle style that we only use when we go out for the day so that it will keep the milk or water cold.

  • We switched to an open cup right before 2.  Occasionally he'll ask for a straw in his cup and that's fine.  He has a water bottle with a straw for on the go and daycare/school requires a closed top so he has to use a straw cup there as well.

  • We let him have a cup of water out all day, so that's always in a straw cup. At meals when he's seated at the table it's always an open cup like us.  Sometimes at the end when he's done eating he'll play add the food to the water (and then drinks, ick!) but that's usually because we've lingered too long and he's bored.

IMO there's no reason to ditch them, unless you're letting LO have juice all day in one that could cause teeth issues but that's the contents not the cup. I figure LO gets thirsty in between meals, just like I do, this way he can help himself on demand. Since it's just water, I don't see the harm.
