Low iron woes

DD had her WIC appt. this morning, the one where they check her height, weight and iron and decide if I'm starving her or something. ( I KNOW that's not its actual purpose, I just always leave there feeling like I starve my kid.)

Anyways, her iron, as usual, was low. My iron is consistently low, and same with my mom and sisters. We ALL have to take iron supplements. DD takes Flinstones vitamins everyday and it has iron in it as well. She usually picks around the iron-rich foods at dinner but I still offer them.

But WIC always guilts me into feeling like a bad mom. They're making me take yet another iron class. I've been to 4 already. I know everything there is to know about iron, but I still have to go.

I can't wait til next week when I take her to her 2 year well check up/shots. The Dr. ALWAYS tells me how GREAT she looks. I never leave there feeling guilty.

  • Aw man, I am sorry they make you feel guilty - I wish they could see the bigger picture and stop being so judgmental with you.

  • Is she breastfed still? Breastfed babies tend to run low. Chloe has been consistently low since her 12m checkup. We have to give her iron every morning with food. It's slowly rising but still low. I've heard cooking in cast iron pots/pans helps too.

    So I feel your pain.
No, not still breast fed, I think the main problem is that it runs in the family.

  • Have you ever thought of getting your docs opinion on paper and giving it to the wic office?

I'm sorry that they made you feel like crap. At Brooklyn's 2 year check up it was determined that she was anemic as well. We just started a multi vitamin with iron and have decreased her dairy intake (it affects iron absorption). I know how you feel. My pedi was kind of douchey when she told us the results.
