IF you have United Healthcare-breast pumps

So I talked with my insurance company and at least under my policy one breast pump will be covered 100%.  These are the 3 companies UHC policy holders can use

Byram Healthcare

1-877-902-9726

They supply

Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump No Tote (AD17070P)

• Personal-use pump

•  Single and double pumping

•  Adjustable independent speed and vacuum control

•  Can be powered by AC Adapter (included), 6AA batteries,

or car adapter.  Batteries and car adapter not included.

Medela Personal Double Pump (MY57038)

• Personal-use pump for single and double pumping

• AC operation and adjustable vacuum

• Compact motor carrying bag with a mesh pocket

• Double pumping kit with:

24 mm PersonalFit™ breast shields

2 breast milk bottles with lids

They were really nice and will start your account 3-4 wks prior to birth but will wait for you to call after birth to submit the claim and order.

Edgepark Medical supplies

1-888-394-5375

They supply

Playtex Double Electric Pump

Ameda Purely yours double electric pump

You can only start an account and place the order once the baby arrives.

Genadyne

1-888-809-9750

They Supply

Rumble Tuff Double Electric Pump

Lancino Infinity Pro Double pump

They also will only start and account after baby is born.

You will need your Dr.  to write a prescription in your name for a Double Electric Breast Pump.

Personally I liked the customer service at Byram the best but maybe I just got lucky.

Hope this info helps you all!  Now to decide which pump is the best!  I had a medela with my first but never liked it.  Come to find out years later the diaphragm that actually controls the suction had a tiny tear so I never received a good suction from it.

I hope so!  I am totally procrastinating cleaning and running errands so I make phone calls :)
  • I have united too, thanks!
  • Thank you!

We are registering tomorrow, so I was going to call UHC tonight to find out which ones they covered.

  • I have united, too.. I called all of the suppliers, and united wont cover the pump until the baby is born, at which time they'll ship it. I checked around, and Byram has a physical retail location near me, so instead of shipping it, I'll have DH pick it up. Definitely worth looking into!

I didn't even think to ask about a physical location.  I will need to check on that.

  • I have United also and I was told that they would also cover up to $200 on any pump of my choice.  So, I'll probably pay a little out of pocket to get the one that I want.  I have an Ameda Purely Yours Advanced, but it's on it's last leg, so I'm thinking about getting a Medela PISA.

  • Another one with United here, I'd started looking at who had what, but had only looked online and so didn't know which fell under the $200 limit! THis is VERY helpful, thank you for putting this together!

  • Everyone should still call to verify this is true for their plan.

Plans written before 8/1/2013 were grandfathered into older rules so you might not be covered.

  • Good to know, thank you!

How does that work? Do we pay at the store for one and get reimbursed or go through medical supply and just pay the difference?

When I talked to the UHC representative I was given the 3 medical distributors above that I had to choose from if I wanted the breast pump to be covered.  Maybe different policy's will allow you to purchase from a store but when I called each of the distributors they had these specific ones that were covered by UHC they didn't need me to clarify the type of policy.  IF you look at some of their sites they will specifically say  UHC also.  As SOMONY said you will want to clarify with your specific policy but this gives you at least an idea.
  • I need to call back and check with mine I wasnt told about the $200 credit for anywhere! Im hoping maybe this applys to me and they just forgot to tell me! I would much rather get the one i really want and just add some money to it to make up the difference!

  • Thanks!!! I'm debating between the Ameda and medela. Can the medela be powered by battery too?

I have been looking them up on amazon, reading reviews and seeing what each of them comes with. That might be helpful.

    Me too!

I am thinking because mine is covered 100% they want to restrict what I pick to some degree.  But definitely call to confirm.

I would think so but since it wasn't listed I would call to make sure.

LOL...I called again today and I was just told that it's covered 100% as long as it comes from a medical supply or the hospital...shit who knows know.  I've been told 2 different things, but this representative sounded like she was more informed.  I'll probably call again in a month or two...I figure the best 2 out of 3 will win...LOL

"Personally I liked the customer service at Byram the best ...."

I have United Healthcare too, and I felt the same way about Byram when I spoke with them earlier this week. Pretty much everything you said is exactly what I was told, except they told me that they'll contact the Dr. for me when I start the claim (30 days before EDD), and will automatically ship the pump on my EDD. If I deliver early, then I just have to call, and they'll ship immediately.
  • Thanks so much for sharing! I was about to spend $350. I have UHC too so i'll call and find out if they'll cover!
  • Thanks for this! I have UMR through United and Byram told me the Medela was unavailable. That was my first choice. I will order the Ameda Purely Yours. You can order in advanced but they won't place the order until the baby is born. My breast feeding instructor told us that we shouldn't pump/ bottle feed for the first 3-4 weeks anyway to make sure BFing is well established so the delay is not a big deal to me.

I agree Byram had the best customer service. My insurance covers the pump 100%.

readyornot12345 my personal opinion after doing research is that the Medela is the best. If your insurance covers that one for you, I would get it.

  • Thanks for this. I did this research too, and what annoys me is that it seems Byram used to carry the Medela PISA, but then stopped. grr.

From what I have read the Medela is just an insurance version of the Medela PISA with a different bag . This was done to keep people from returning the Medela PISA they received through insurance to Babies R Us for cash.  My understanding is that it can be battery operated, but it does not come with the battery pack, so this must be purchased separately.

  • Thank you so much! I have united amd this really helps.
  • I have united and got the ameda and it was awful. I ended up buying a Medela pisa. The ameda barely pumped anything.

  • uhc would not cover a pump from edgepark, only a rental,  I ordered from the other distributer and it was covered.
