12wk apt.... No ultrasound

I was so excited this morning to go to my doctor apt today because I thought I would being seeing my little babe. But I was disappointed when they said no ultrasound and I won't get one until I'm 20wks!!!! I did get to hear the heartbeat which is awesome, but still bummed. Has anyone else had this? I thought I would have had one done by now and definitely by 20 wks :-/ just got my hopes up is all.

Re: 12wk apt.... No ultrasound

  • This is pretty much the norm for a lot of doctors unless you have special circumstances. No ultrasound for me either.

  • Did you have the option for the NT scan?  That would have been the only way for us to get an earlier u/s.

  • My situation is the same too. As long as things are progressing normally no US until 18-20 weeks.
  • Same for us. We did get the option for NT screen so that's the only way we get to

This. We had our 12-week with my Ob on Tuesday, and it was just doppler. On Wednesday we had our NT scan, which we did with the specialists at the hospital (out of my Ob's office). If we hadn't done the NT scan, our next ultrasound wouldn't be until 20 weeks.

  • Outside of the optional NT scan, the 20 week anatomy scan is the only necessary ultrasound. It seems like a lot of doctors will choose to give you more if they have the equipment available but perhaps your doctor does not. You could always choose to pay for an elective ultrasound. You could get that at any time.

  • I attend a army hospital they don't do one until 20 weeks. I have been going to a baby ultrasound place to get one every 4 weeks due to previous miscarriages and being worried.
  • I won't be having another U/S at my 12 week appt. next Wednesday either. I called the doc to see what I can expect and at least I will be able to hear my babies. This will be the first time also so hopefully they cooperate.
I'll have to record it also since my DH won't be able to make it.

  • If it helps, my Army OB gave me a letter saying, 'U/S waves are a form of energy which affects body tissues and even at low levels they can have physical effects. These effects include a rise in temp and vibrations within living tissue. Although at this time there is no proven harmful effect to the human fetus from US waves, these physical effects are still cause for some concern, particularly with regard to the sensitive developing organs of the fetus.' So basically unless you have a high risk pregnancy, they would rather err on the side of caution. Hope this helps because I was bummed too.
  • I had my first appointment at 12 weeks (on Monday) and we only had Doppler. I'll have an ultrasound at my next appointment at 16-17 weeks. At first I was freaking out about not having an ultrasound, but I've calmed down about it. Don't get me wrong I still wish I could see my baby, but if it's what they think is best, then I'm fine.
  • I just had my first prenatal at 11 weeks this morning, and they aren't doing an ultrasound until my 18 week appointment.  I did have an unscheduled u/s at 6 weeks (I was bleeding, so they did one at the hospital), but the 18 week will be the only one, as long as they can hear the baby's heartbeat on the doppler.

  • You are paying for it.  If you want an ultrasound, tell your doc that you want one.

  • I had the NT scan yesterday! So i got to see it. I was very happy but not another one until 18th week. I believe you should of had one sorry you didn't though . All doctors work differently
  • My OB usually does an initial one (around 9 weeks) and then the anatomy scan (18 - 20 weeks).  That is unless you opt to do the NT scan.

We had extra ones at week 7 & 8, but that is only because we were at a fertility clinic to begin with.

  • With DD I never had ultrasounds at the doctor's office, only the hospital. So the only time I had one was the first trimester scan at 13 weeks and the 20 week anatomy scan.
