Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Swim diapers.

Hi ladies,

My LO is 2 months but will be starting swim lessons at 3 months. Did any of you take your LOs swimming this summer.. What swim diapers do you recommend? I'm thinking perhaps cloth would be better than disposable?

Thanks so much!

Re: Swim diapers.

  • We took LO to the pool a couple times.  There really aren't any disposable swim diapers for babies under 16 lbs. so we got the Baby BanZ UV Swim Diaper (Amazon), which we put over the smallest disposable swim diaper we could find.  It worked well.  We didn't stay out too long though since it was really hot and DD takes a nap every 1.5-2 hours.  I'm assuming you could put a cloth diaper under the reusable swim diaper as well.

  • We've been taking our daughter swimming since she was about 2.5months> prior to that we put a huggies disposable on and swam with her in our big bathtub. She pooped all the time so she wore the diapers!  The swim diapers were huge but they somehow still kept the poop in.

When we started going to the pool we put a cloth swim diaper over the disposables (I had a huge fear of her pooping in the pool and them calling a "code brown" and clearing out the pool!  She never pooped in the pool when she wore both diapers.

Last week I only put her in a disposable (she is now 16lbs) and she pooped in the pool but it didn't leak at all.

Bring numerous diapers what ever you decide to use...the swim diapers only hold it long enough for you to go change so you need another to put baby into.

My daughter outgrew her Monkey Doodles swim diaper way to fast so I've decided to stick with the disposables (even though we use cloth out of pool).

On a side note: a mom at the pool told me that she puts the huggies disposable diapers in the washer and dryer and reuses them a good 5plus times!!!!!!!  I plan to try it out, not with a poopy diaper but one she wore and didn't soil.  If it works it sounds like a good way to save money!

  • I have iplay and Bummis swim diapers. The Bummis size M is supposed to fit 15-22 lbs, but I got it tight enough on my 13 lb DD.

  • I've used Swim School, iplay and Speedo. Speedo are my favorite. The iplay works well, but seems so bulky and heavy when wet. The Speedo ( Target) has never failed us and fit well without adding a ton of bulk. Swim School are ok, but I don't care for the fit as much. They seem a little low on baby's backside. I find they all wash easily and i prefer them over buying disposable. Some swim diapers are cute enough to use as a swimsuit bottom on their own too.
