Any "Milk alternative" mamas out there? Need help with coconut oil as fat alternative

Back when I knew we were going to have to start the transition to whole milk I started to research alternatives to cows milk. I have several reasons for preferring to give the boys an alternative if possible. After lots of research I couldn't find anything that seemed high enough in fat and calcium so went to organic whole milk, hoping I was doing some due diligence. Fast forward to a few days ago when I was pouring the boys milk and happened to look in the bottom of the container to find a thick, brown sediment at the bottom. Horrified and disgusted I've been literally making calls since to try to get to the bottom of it......On to the point of my post. I've since decided that I am going to give them almond milk (which has more calcium) and fortify the fats and protein by diet and coconut oil. My question is, what's the best way to make sure they're getting enough of the oil? I can't mix it in their individual drinks bc it solidifies and to put it on/in food, how do you really measure their intake? I'm feeling confident about making the transition off of cows milk but I guess not so much as to how to supplement effectively. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!!

  • I am no help, but I would speak to both the pediatrician and a pediatric nutritionist before removing milk completely.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!

  • My babies aren't here yet, so I'm still in the process of researching. I was thinking of relying on pureed avocados for a good fat source. I also recently read this article: https://diaryofanutritionist.com/2010/02/09/milk-alternatives-for-developing-babies-and-growing-children/

  • Have you looked at tempeh milk?  It's what we will use when our twins get to that stage.

How funny I just read this article last night! Great info. The boys actually love avocado and eat it often I'm just concerned about quantifying how much they're getting to replace the fat from the milk. I'm sure I'm making a bigger deal over this than it should be but I'm just stressing over it big time.

  • Netpetal- I actually haven't heard of tempeh milk. Is that similar to hemp? I've skowered all of the options in our stores here and have never seen it. Ill look into it though thanks!

  • We just got the OK from our pedi to transition to almond milk instead of cow's. She wasn't concerned about their fat intake because they eat a lot of avocados, cheese, veggies sauteed in olive oil, etc. Yes, it is important that they are getting a good amount of fat, but I don't thin you necessarily need to be measuring out portions. Just offer them high fat foods with every meal. If you bake, you can use coconut oil as a butter replacement.

I think this is exactly what I needed to hear. I feed them heathy foods and give them a well balanced diet, so I know they're getting their nutrients but its just so hard to go against the norm sometimes. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!!

  • One of my twins has a dairy allergy, the other a soy (outgrown, yay!) and peanut allergy - so we had no choice but to go with an alternative and they've done great.  They drink almond milk  (the one that is 60 cals/serving). We don't add anything to it, and they are high percentiles for height/weight. They are 2 1/2 now, but when they were younger, I added olive oil to everything to add a little extra fat. But, they also eat lots of avocados, coconut or almond milk yogurt, coconut oil butter. Also, if you are okay with soy, tofu and toffuti products (cream cheese sub) are good....although I'm not sure if you are avoiding dairy entirely, or just milk specifically.
