Nap help?

Hi ladies. I am hoping someone can help me... I have 4 month old twins. One of them insists on nursing to sleep and bed-sharing for all naps and nighttime sleep. If i move away from her, she wakes and refuses to go back to sleep without me. I don't mind so much, except that it's really difficult to take care of my other daughter (my mom helps but obviously only I can BF) and I'll be returning to work in three weeks and have no idea how my mom will ever get her to nap.

I don't plan to ever use CIO and she's so young... Anyone know of any gentle ways I get her to nap in her crib unassisted? Unfortunately what works for a singleton (wearing down, nursing to sleep, taking naps with her, etc.) just aren't practical with twins and I am just stuck. :(

Thanks so much...

Re: Nap help?

  • I was in the same boat, but with a singleton. I picked a couple of tips from the no cry nap solution. First, we put socks on her to sleep. Next she wears a shirt/top with covered shoulders. Finally, she wers her sleep sack, same as nighttime and a fan.

I started waiting until J was deeply asleep (20min after unlatching) and slipping my shirt over my breastfeeding pillow. She was able to still smell me and because she is used to nursing to sleep. I gradually decreased the snuggle/wait time so within a few weeks I was slipping out after 2-3min.

We do allow J to sleep in our bed for naps by herself. Our bed is safe (we bed share at night, after first MOTN wake up). I put pillows to keep her from falling and my mom watches her on the monitor. J will also allow my mom to put her down following the same pattern (socks, shirt, sleepsack and fans).

We did have to order a crib this week since J is getting increasingly mobile, so we will see how that goes! Good luck!

  • Interesting. What do the socks/covered shoulders do? I'm still swaddling (naps only) but if I left her alone I probably wouldn't, she's getting too close to rolling over. She takes FOREVER to get into deep sleep, but I always do try to wait until then to move her. I'll try slipping my shirt over a pillow, that's a great idea. It's like she can instantly sense the minute I leave. Thanks!

  • If twin 2 sleeps well independently, is it feasible for twin 1 just to be worn during naps?

Also, how do they do if they're napping together, even touching each other skin to skin? :)

  • The socks and shoulders covered is supposed to be part of the sleep routine and help with constant temperature. J also kicks her feet and scratches the backs of her calves with her toenails (despite my efforts to clip the nails).

I do wear twin 1 for a lot of her naps... But have to take her out of the wrap to feed twin 2 when twin 2 wakes ... And twin 1 always wakes up too. So her naps are short.

I've never tried putting them together. They flail their arms and legs so much I was afraid they'd hurt each other! :) maybe I'll try it. They don't interact with each other much yet.

Those nails! One of my girls scratched herself deeply overnight on her forehead - she now looks like Harry Potter. :( I put her in a footed sleeper for overnight sleep but unfortunately she can still scratch her face.

I will just add that my friend with twins had them sleep together in the crib for all sleeping until they were too big for it (I think they made the change to two cribs around 5 - 6 months old).
