A FB friend just had a baby and announced the name is Fiona. I used to really dislike it, all I can think about is Shrek and Princess Fiona. Lately I'm liking it a bit more, though.
I do think of Shrek, and also a book series I read as a kid in which one of the characters is named Fiona, but her brother calls her Fi-moan-a. For some reason that NN has always stuck! But the name is NMS anyway. I definitely would not side eye anyone with this name.
Meh, it's a nice name and I don't mind it on someone else's kid. It's actually getting pretty popular, too. It's just a little frilly/flouncy/dramatic for me. But I certainly don't roll my eyes when I hear it.
I don't really get the whole "the movie ruined it for me" Its just a fictional character and a children's one at that! The name is perfectly fine just nms- not crazy about the sound of it

When people here it, they immediately say "Princess Fiona" and associate it was a big green ogre, fictional or not.
It's one I want to like given it meets all my key criteria - a real name, pronounceable, spellable, etc. but vowel-heavy names like this are NMS. But I'm happy to see others use it.

Fictional/literary associations can be just as pervasive, if not sometimes more pervasive, than "real" ones.
No I dont like it. And yes I think of Shrek. And also, while we as 20-40 year old women dont think that reference is a serious one, your kid isnt going to be born 30. I *guarantee* that if I asked my children right now what they thought of the name Fiona every. single. one would laugh out loud and say Shrek. ETA: Just did. And I was right. My 5 year old said "I LOVE it! Lets have twins named Shrek and Fiona!!!" So theres that answer.
Its interesting to me that people worry about their children being teased from their names but not worry about Fiona. Thats not to say I wouldnt use it for teasing reasons because I think kids can be teased for anything (and will!). But yeah.
If a Fiona is teased over her name, and that's the only issue she ever has... she has it pretty good My daughters name is Alexis, nickname Lexi. I'm sure the whole "sexy Lexi" thing will be played out when she's in school. Because kids are mean. That didn't stop me from using it.
But I digress- my 7 year old says "that does remind me of Shrek! but that's a pretty name!!"
I adore Fiona and it was on my short list, but FI can't get past Shrek. Maybe for the next one he can get over the Shrek thing...because I think it would sound awesome with our current daughters name.

This (except for having a daughter Alexis, haha)
As for the bolded--that probably won't be an issue. Naughty Nadia (my name is Nadia) never caught on for me and if all Fiona has to worry about is a princess, she's fine.

ETA: I think of Brigadoon and The Secret of Roan Inish before I think of Shrek when I think of fictional Fionas.
