Sippy cups?

Just read on another blog some are starting to transition their LOs from bottle to sippy cup around 6 months of age - anyone doing this and care to share their experience? Our LO is just now getting the hang of oatmeal twice a day, looking to introduce fruits and veggies next week. The thought of sippy cups hasn’t even come to mind, until now! TIA.

Re: Sippy cups?

  • At our 6 month appointment the doc said we could start playing around with one with just a little bit of water. Then she said when DS got the hang of the mechanics we could try some formula in there so he's not associating formula = bottle, everything else = sippy cup.

So far we've played around with a cup a few times. DS thinks it's fun. He gets that "stuff" comes out of it and will open his mouth now when he sees it but he doesn't understand completely which is fine. I like the idea of practicing with it though so that way we hopefully won't get a refusal once it's time to stop with bottles all together. I once babysat for a little boy who had a bottle when he was 3.

  • We started with a straw cup about a month ago or so. DD turned 6 months yesterday and we haven't done solids yet. Usually I put bm in the cup but recently tried water. She can take a couple ounces of bm before getting frustrated, but isn't crazy about water just yet.

  • I transitioned both of my girls over to them at 5-6mo - got rid of all the bottles and went cups-only when they hit the 6mo mark.

The boys have been slower to take to them, tho. At 7mo, Jamie uses his like a pro, but Sims still struggles with it because the flow is faster than his bottles. We do cups during the day, and let Simon use his bottles when he's tired. The boys are still using soft, collapsible tipped cups for now - I'm planning to move James over to the normal Gerber cups this month, and give Simon a few more weeks to figure out his patterns.

In my experience, it's just a lot easier to transition earlier than later. I still let all of my kids self-wean on binkies - they can have them for soothing for as long as they want (neither of the girls used them past 18mo). It's just not wanting them to start biting holes in the nipples (not as big an issue now that silicone is the main-stream, but still possible for them to bite chunks off once those top teeth come in), and getting them into the habit of having to tilt the cup toward them so that it's easier to learn to use a normal cup later.

I don't judge either way as long as baby is getting enough to eat.

  • We have played around with one for about a month... Give it to him when he eats solids. We still bf so no bottle transition, but he does love to hold it and drink from it

  • Our little One stopped using bottles altogether suddenly. I had to figure out another way. So we started to use the sippy cups. At first he just gnawed on them. He seems to have gotten used to it now and is sucking and tipping the cup up. We started with water and ice. Today was the first time I put breastmilk in the cup. He seemed to do just fine! I'm so excited we found another way.
  • At our one appointment, our doctor told us to get our daughter one to play around with while in the tub then our 6th month appointment our doctor said that if we are feeding her solids we should be getting her a sippy with water instead of a bottle.

  • I gave my DD a sippy cup with formula in it to try the other day. I just gave it to her & let her check it out herself. She only drank 2oz out of it, but I read that to get them use to it just give it to them once a day & eventually they'll get the hang of it. But of course at this point she prefers the bottle cause the cup is foreign to her lol
  • I gave mine one for the first time the other day.  He mostly chewed on the bottom of it. :)  He's EBF and has never had a bottle, so I was surprised he drank it when I tilted it up.  I lost the handles for it between kids, so I need to get him a better one so he can hold it more easily. DS1 became proficient with one pretty quickly.

  • My pedi said to start now that he is 6 months, but he is EBF and we rarely ever give even a bottle. I think I'm waiting for a while... at least until we start solids.
