Purple legs?

I also posted this in 3-6 months. My one little guy was with his grandparents yesterday and they say his legs were purple and cold when he was sleeping for 2-3 min. They had just gone from the air condition to outside. I called the doctor who said it sounded like he was probably just cold or in a weird position. But to watch if any other symptoms come up. Any one else experience this? He is a healthy baby no nicu time.

Re: Purple legs?

  • Sounds normal to me. My newborns would occasionally turn purple like that and then just go back to normal. Remember that babies' legs can't fall asleep and tingle yet, so they don't notice anything feeling different if they're in a weird position. Generally if they ARE in a weird position, someone is holding them and they jiggle them around and adjust them frequently anyway, so it goes back to normal. I think it sounds like he was probably cold - they can mottle or turn purple when they get cold and it looks ten times worse than it is!

  • I remember this happening with my DS a few times when he was about 3 months old. It scared me half to death! Their doctor agreed with yours, it was likely due to positioning. He was totally fine.

  • Same as PPs said.  DD had this happen quite a few times as a newborn. The doctor said it was due to her either being cold or an odd position that restricted blood flow.  We would always rub her legs to warm them and encourage blood flow.  She was always back to pink in a minute or two. I don't remember noticing it happen after 3 or 4 months.
