Transitioning out of the Swaddle....

My LO will be 4 months on the 30th and he has been swaddled since day one for both naps and bedtime. Over the weekend, I tried to have his naps un-swaddled and was very unsuccessful. He'd wake after about 30 minutes. I'm too scared to try it at night because he's been sleeping through the night since 10 wks.

Anyone out there who has had success with transitioning out of the swaddle? Please help!!!

  • No advice really, just sympathy. We started to try unswaddling for naps 2 weeks ago. We usually have the same short nap issues. However this weekend I got a 1 hour and a 2.5 hour nap unswaddled. I think we're making progress! I also don't want to attempt bed time for the same fear. Hang in there. It's got to get better... Right? Good luck!

  • magic sleep suit transitioned us out of the swaddle AND Rock n Play- into the crib. used it for about a month and now she sleeps in footed pjs. totally worth the 40 bucks for that thing, I LOVED it!
  • Im attempting no swaddle this friday night. Last time, we made it to 2am without a swaddle. His hands attack his face and head...they wont leave him alone long enough for him to fall back to sleep. When I put him to sleep that night I had to hold his arms, I wasnt willing to do that at 2am.

  • I did an arms out swaddle last night. My DD sleeps terribly so I thought, what do I have to lose? She slept the same as usual so I think I'll just keep her unswaddled.

  • We transitioned out of the swaddle about a month ago. I found that using a sleep sack helped as a substitute, since DS was still able to have his arms out but still felt somewhat contained, if that makes sense. It was a little rough at first because he kept stretching and startling himself awake but I'm glad we kept with it because after a few nights he got used to it and we don't need the swaddle anymore. I'm glad we transitioned when we did because he is rolling from back to front now. You could always try arms out at first like PP suggest. With some patience and persistence, you'll be there! Good luck mama!

    This exactly for us, too!

  • We actually had better luck with LO sleeping unswaddled at night. It took a couple of nights for him to stop startling himself awake. It's been a week now and he is sleeping the same in his footie pajamas as he did in his swaddle at night. I still swaddle with one arm out for naps. My theory is that he just isn't sleeping deeply enough during naps to sleep through all the hand movements yet but he is at night.

  • We pretty much went cold turkey from RnP and swaddle. We started putting him in a sleep sack and in the crib. It took about 4 days for the full adjustment but it was worth the pain of those few days !
