rewards and potty training

I recently begun my research on Potty Training and am going to wait a bit to train my LO. However, as I read I keep seeing suggestions for a reward system or stickers, etc. That sounds fine to me but I am curious, do they continue to expect rewards long after they are sufficiently trained? Do they sometimes expect rewards in other places? I just don't want something like that to backfire. TIA

Re: rewards and potty training

  • I Give An M&M for each success. we haven't gotten to the end yet, so i haven't stopped rewarding, but i think it'll come gradually. he hasn't expected anything else rewarded with candy like potty training, so i don't think it's an issue.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • I'm not a fan of rewards for something like the potty.  Well, physical rewards - we certainly cheer and do a happy dance.  But everyone has their own approach, and you should do what you feel is right for your kid. :)

My daughter didn't potty train until shortly after 3yrs old.  And we talked about it for two months before ditching the diapers.

  • We did stickers.  I bought a pack that had 4 sheets of stickers, and DD got one sticker every time she went on the potty successfully.  Once the pack ran out, I just told her there were no more and she was fine with that.  She potty trained at 2.5 years.
  • We are one week into potty training. We used a jelly bean as a positive reinforcement for using the potty. The first day, he was all about the jelly beans! It was definitely the biggest motivator to get him on the potty and peeing. By the second day, I stopped mentioning the jelly beans. If he asked for it, i gave it. If he didn't mention it, then we just did the usual hugs and cheers, etc. Now, after a week, he doesn't even bring up the jelly beans. Once he got the hang of it, the praise and celebration and knowing he was staying dry seemed to be reinforcing enough. So all of that to say, i think it will fade itself out over time, so don't worry too much about giving an m&m :)

  • We do high 5s here.  So far they are working.  We are still having issues with pooping in the potty, so I bought some stickers for those.  Seems to be working for us.

  • If you pair things like stickers or food with praise, it is likely you can soon fade out the items. This is because the praise will become its own reward when paired with highly valued items such as sweets. And it's not always necessary to use food or other items. Sometimes kids just like the feeling of being a big kid. Go with what your LO likes most. That's what will work best.
  • We did M&M's and stickers - the want for stickers faded pretty quick and then the M&M's faded.   Every once in awhile he will say, "I went pee I get an M&M!"  and then I just say, "oh we dont' have M&M's any more".  And then he says ok and goes on his merry way.

It's really not that big of a deal.

  • We're having success with stickers.  At 4 sheets for a dollar from the dollar store, I bought two packs and we still have a LOT left... Worth $2 and he loves them.  :)

  • I gave M&Ms for maybe a week. Then I stopped offering and she stopped asking.

  • Ever seen one of those little gumball machines? I put some Reece's Pieces in it (I personally like peanut butter better than chocolate :D ) and set it in the bathroom. When my daughter would pee, she'd get a shiny penny to "buy" herself a treat! And when she pooped, she'd get a special big coin, a nickle!!! lol Both gave the same amount of treats, but she liked the concept.
And I told her that once the candy was all gone out of the globe, no more!
She was perfectly ok with it, and it went as smoothly as possible! Granted, she was almost 2.5, but she has PDD-NOS so some things don't come easy for her.
The visual reminder of those candies sitting on the counter was a big motivator for her. :)
