How many kids.....

I stole this from another board, but thought it was interesting, When talking to someone you just met and they are telling you how many children they have, what number makes you say "wow!" Not in a bad or judgy way, but just as in wow- that's a lot of kids.

My neighbor just brought home their 6th girl and I think that's a lot of kids! I am at capacity with 3 and I feel like that's a lot-

I have a coworker that came from a family of 13 and that makes my head want to explode-

What number makes you say wow?

Re: How many kids.....

  • At this point, I cannot fathom having more than 2...but before I had kids I would say 5+ would be a lot.

  • Our neighbor has 5 (and homeschools them all) but she said the first 3 were tough but after that her last two were her most fun. Her older kids were big enough to help out and she had been there done that so nothing scared her anymore. I'm only at 1 but I'd love a lot more. I come from an huge catholic family so having a lot of kids isn't anything new.
  • 3 kids makes me say WOW.  I may end up having three but for right now that's what I think :)

  • Probably 4 or more. Depends on the ages, though, too.

  • Anything over 3 makes me think "holy cow, that's a lot of kids!"

  • 4 is a lot of kids, but I wouldn't say wow unless its 5 or more.

I thought I wanted a large family with at least three kids, but 2 is a lot of work and I can't imagine having more.

  • I would say more than 4 depending on age.

I have a FB friend who is pregnant with her 4th and her oldest is in Pre-k.  Both her and her husband work FT.  Her latest pregnancy announcement made me say "wow."

  • I think over 4.  My one friend just had her 5th kid.  All her kids are small.  I think the oldest is maybe 7 or something.  That's a lot to me!  She seems to have a good handle it.  They make good $, she doesn't work, they have a huge beautiful house, etc.  Yes it might be all superficial but at least she makes it look manageable!

Also she's super skinny and works out a lot.  So on the outside it all looks perfect!

I think I could have 4 except for the $.
  • I say wow whenever I think about how I have four (ages 9 months to 6 years.)

Whenever we talk about possibly having another my oldest says "mom, 5 kids is a lotta kids" so I think he sees anymore than we have as being a lot.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I'd say more than 4.

And like with @jlaOK it depends on age - I know someone who had 2 kids then an "oops" which ended up as twins so she had 4 kids 5 and under!

  • I thought my wow number was 5 - because that's what I thought when I found out a mom friend at school had 5 - all about 2 yrs apart with the oldest being 9.  Then I found out her sister has 13!  That was a beyond a wow to me.

  • 5...even though i probably wont have more than 2. HA
  • Five is a lot to me. We will probably have 3 and I will remain somewhat open to the idea of 4.

  • I don't want 3 personally but 4 makes me think wow.

  • I come from a family of four and whenever I encounter a family larger than that, I think wow! But it's so rarely happened. DH & I was more but we want them all spaced out a bit so I think I'll age out before we get beyond 4.

  • I think 5 is the tipping point where I start to think that is a lot of kids. But, I will say ages of the kids make a difference.

My BFF has 4, but I think it is more manageable because they are all at least 3.5-4yrs apart. They are 16,11, 7 & 3.  She has 8 brothers and sisters though so her 4 is pretty small in her eyes, and she is a SAHM which I think makes it much easier to manage a larger number of children.

I definitely went WOW when my mom told me about her hairdresser who has 5 under 5yrs old. A set of 3yr old twins, and a set of 1yr old triplets (all without any IF treatments) and they don't think they are done yet.

Anything over 4 provably because I'm one of four. Although I was just around a family with 3 kids and my head was spinning! Guess it all depends on the family though.

I think anyone who has more than 2 is out of their fcuking gourd.  Speaking from personal experience...

  • 4 would be a lot for us. But my BFF has 6, 2 bio (12,7), 3 adopted and 1 foster. The adopted/foster are 2 sets of siblings and are all young. She has 4 under 3.
The most absurd was my grandmother - she had 7 under 5. Yep. 3 kids then 2 sets of twins 13months apart. Holy F.

  • I don't think the number of kids is as important as the age gap.  My cousin has 6 children under the age of 5 years old.  Two sets of twins!  WOW!
  • I would say Wow at 5. This reminds me of @MommaBear. If you're lurking-thinking of you while on ML.

  • 5+. I'm also in the camp of if you can't fit everyone in a non-passenger styel fan that's a crazy big family.

We'll definitely try for a third and are up in the air over a fourth.

  • I think over 4.

    I have a bunch of Irish friends who are 1 of 12, i of 13, 1 of 8.

My maternal grandfather was the 7th or 12 kids.  Seems Italians and Irish don't believe in BC or TV   ;-)

  • Wait, you can fit five kids in a mini-van, right?  And certainly in a Suburban?

  • I think anything over 3.  I know quite a few people that have three and it seems manageable but anything over that is something I cannot even think of.  I've always said I would only have as many kids as I have hands.  And that's what we have and we are staying put on that number - H had a V so we are officially done!

  • For me, it's four kids. When I see 4 kids, I think, "Who the heck would want that many kids in this day and age!"

  • 4 seems like a lot, especially if they're all really close in age. I teach first grade in school where some of the families pop 'em out every year. One mom came in yesterday with a first grader, a preschooler, one in a stroller and a baby bump. Say what?!
