XP: the morning clingys

My 1yo is having a clingy phase where all she wants to do in the mornings is sit in my lap, hang on my pant leg, or hold my hands so I can help her "walk." Needless to say, we are having a hard time getting out of the house in the morning.

How did/do you keep your pre-walking baby busy in the mornings? She'll read a book or play with a toy on her own for about 30 seconds but then wants me to help. I'm fast with packing lunch, but not quite The Flash.

Re: XP: the morning clingys

  • They go thru a wonder week stage from around 50.5 to 54.5 weeks, if you buy into that stuff. (I think it is pretty acurate) Extra clingyneas and "needing" help with things they can do themselves is part of the process from what I have read.

I try to just talk to DS about what I am doing or sing to him so he still knows I am interacting with him and not ignoring him. But is all else fails and we have to be out the doir for something and I can't stop to comfort or help him every three seconds then I pullout my mei tei and strap him to me.

  • Interesting. I do buy into the wonder week thing and I didn't realize we were probably in one! That gives me hope that she's not necessarily developing into a clingy kid!

Usually DH and I tag team out little rascal in the mornings, but even then he spends time in his high chair munching on Cheerios while DH cooks breakfast. DH is also the one that usually dresses DS for the day.

When DH is out if town like this week, I try to get myself ready before DS is awake. When he does wake up before I am done getting ready I have him hang out in his pack n play in my room while he has his morning milk. I put a couple toys in there and position it so he can see me. He never fusses, then I use his high chair and Cheerios to keep him happy while I make breakfast, then after breakfast we get him ready and I take him to day care on my way to work.

DS went through a clingy/whiny stage when he first moved to the toddler room at daycare, thankfully that was short lived. He has always gotten whiny when he is very tired or hungry.

  • DS is super clingy in the morning. I talk to him and I've become an expert at doing things with one hand while holding him. I try to give him cuddle time too which I can do since he's been waking up at 5:30!!!!
  • We just started dealing with that ths week too! I'm lucky that daycare is only 3 blocks away, so I ended up taking her there yesterday morning and then coming home for another 10 minutes to finish getting ready.

  • OMG @amysmolos, my DD had a month long phase where she woke at 530 every day. I wanted to die those weeks. Bless you for dealing with he clingys for so long in the mornings!

And @L12541, glad I'm not alone in this developing all of a sudden. That's pretty sweet that you can come back home to finish getting ready but I bet it's still a big wrench in your morning schedule.

  • I get up before my kids do... All four of them and I wake them in order if oldest to youngest
    lolololo
  • I usually spend some time with him in the mornings, just us hanging out, after he nurses.  Then I bring him to the room, set him down with something that is not a toy and he's happy.  lol.. Or he goes through my bathroom cabinets.  I pick it up later, so its no big deal to me.  Then when dad finally gets up he takes him for a bit while I finish getting the bags ready and in the car.
