Mp? No not a pip!

I've had 'not the norm' starts to labor, so this may be a dumb question...

With dd2, I walked for an hour at the hospital and went from 1-4 cm in that hour. I never felt what I would call a contraction, in that I never felt my stomach tighten, I just had waves of pain that I had to stop and breath through while bending over.

Recently, I've been having those same pains, no tightening of the belly, but nothing patterned. I know its not actual labor, but wondering if its causing anything to happen dilation-wise.

So, has anyone ever dilated and not lost a mp? I've never lost one, but I've never dilated not in a hospital either, where someone was checking me.

Not hoping for dilation, but we live an hour or so from the hospital, and my last delivery went really fast. I guess I'm thinking that as long as my mp doesn't make an appearance, I'm not dilating and don't have to worry about a sudden quick labor?

I don't know if I really worded any of that right, but hopefully you get the question I'm trying to figure out in my head.

Re: Mp? No not a pip!

  • With my first I must have lost my mucus plug but I never saw it.  My water began leaking in the middle of the night and contractions started soon after.  With my 2nd I swear I saw  my mucus plug about a month before I actually went into labor.   I was getting ready for my brothers wedding and when I went to the restroom  had a ton of mucus and some blood.  At my next appointment I was checked and was at 3-4 cm and stayed that way until 2 days after my due date.   Oh and at my friends birth her mucus plug came out at the hospital and she was well past 6cm if I remember correctly.  Don't know if that helps but 3 different labors = 3 different scenarios.

  • Thanks ladies. I guess that answers my question! I've been telling myself (and others who freak out every time I bed over with these pains) that its not doing anything because I haven't lost the plug, thinking surely it would fall out if I was dilating. Guess that's not necessarily the case though.

  • With my first I never saw a mp.  With my second I lost it over the course of probably three days, it was pretty unremarkable and at the time I wasn't even sure if that's what was going on.
  • With my first, I lost it well into active labour. 7cms or so, I would guess?
