2 month check-up and a question (den^2)

Austin had his 2 month check-up today at 10 weeks (5 weeks adjusted). He weighed in at 7lb 10oz (17th percentile) and 23 inches (87th percentile) on the preemie chart. He was vaccinated and seems to be tolerating it well.

My question is this, we were asked 3 separate times if he was smiling responsively. He is not. He is very alert and very curious, but does not smile responsively. When I told the pedi that I was getting concerned with how many times they asked about this, she said that they just ask more out of curiosity and that it is not something we should expect until 6-8 weeks adjusted. those of you with similar gestation preemies (or really, anyone), when did you start to notice this behavior? Should I be concerned at this time or just give it a few weeks and see what happens? Thanks for your input!

  • Give it a few weeks. With preemies milestones should always be judged by adjusted age in the beginning.

  • DD2 started really smiling responsively to us in the last couple weeks and she's 7.5w. I would give it a little more time. Plus not all babies are the same--just like any age. Some ppl just don't smile much :)

  • Our baby is 8 weeks (born on her due date) and only smiles once or twice a day.

  • If he's only 5w adjusted, try not to worry.  They were probably asking out of habit as it's something that usually happens right around 2 months for full termers.  DS's smiles should be showing up soon :D.  For sure go by the adjusted age on this one.

  • DD didn't start smiling responsively for a while, probably 8-10 weeks and then it was only for DH. I cried one night when I told him I didn't think she liked me because she didn't smile for me. Silly, I know. Now at 5 months, she smiles all the time for us. Still not much at daycare, the ladies there did mention how serious she is. Sounds like your son had a great appointment and don't worry, the smiles will come and when they do they will melt your heart!

I was worried about the smiling thing, but from what I read the range for full term babies is typically 8-12 weeks. My A was 4 weeks early and started smiling responsively at a little over 8 weeks (which was a few days after his 2 month appointment when I also got asked about smiling ).

Try not to sweat it. If it hasn't happened by 3 months adjusted, then you could talk to your pedi but my guess is your little guy will be grinning by that time.
