Baby Names

David

Today at the zoo I saw the CUTEST little boy named David, which reminded me how much I like the name. It's also my dad's name (though he goes by Dave pretty much 100% of the time). Thoughts? Is it classic like James and Andrew, or dated/70's like Michael and Steven? I would want to call him David exclusively (both 'cause it sounds better and to differentiate from my dad). And disclaimer: I'm not sure how DH would feel about using my dad's name.

Re: David

  • I've always loved David.  Given it's biblical origins, I think it's too timeless to be tied to any one generation (like the 70s reference you gave).  And it feels rare at the moment, from the point of view I cannot think of any child I know with the name.

Funny how one cute little kid can tip a name for you like that!

  • It is actually my son's name.  I like it because it is my husband's middle name and my grandfather's first name.

It fits him fine.  I especially enjoy the fact the it will always be timeless, but not overly popular either.

A kid can totally make or break a name, isn't it crazy? My biggest of GP names, Blakely (I know, it's dreadful and kind of made up. I own it) is thanks to a darling little baby and her sweet, lovely mother.

  • A favorite of mine. DS2 was almost David, but we named him after our grandfathers instead. However, if I had another (which won't happen) it would be at the top of the list.

  • Wait, Michael and Steven scream dated/70s? What's the reasoning behind that? And I think David is great. Maybe you can use your FIL's name for the MN and cover both bases? We'll be doing that if #2 is a boy.
  • One of my most favorite "common" names. My nephew is David and he goes exclusively by David. A top contender for our LOs mn, should LO be a boy.
  • David is hands down my favorite "classic" boy name. I know so few young ones. It's such a great name.

  • I am just curious on why you consider Michael to be dated vs classic. It hit the top ten in 1943 and has stayed there since. From '54 - '98, with the exception of '60 where it was #2, it was at #1. From '99- '08 it was #2. *Edit- I like David, but it makes me think of A Child Called It, a very sad autobiography.
I think it's two things: (1) I've never met a little boy Michael, but I know a ton of adult men (my dad's age and older) with the name, and (2) I heavily associate the name with The Godfather.

  • You went to the zoo today? Josh and Rhett were at the zoo.

I really like the name David. And I think it's nice to name a baby after your dad. Though I think sibset considerations are totally stupid most of the time, it'd be KINDA weird for DDs to have such off-beaten names and a DS to have a super-traditional one. But...that really doesn't matter much.

LOL, I'm not even surprised. As we were leaving, Kevin was like, "That was nice. Not something we do every day." And I was like, "Well, no, we're not the [Your LN]'s."

Monica did the carousel. It was fun, but hot by the time we left.

  • love it

    classic definitely

  • I think it's a perfectly fine name. I have a personal aversion to it, but acknowledge that it fits with my tendency to like classic, Biblical male names.

  • It is a little dated to me since I was born in the 70s. Even though it is a Bible name, it's a bit played out like Adam, Mark, and Matthew were in my generation. That's not to say it is too soon to use David, but it would surprise me as much as hearing my own name on a baby. (Although my name isn't Biblical, it was trendy.)

Since it is a family name I would keep it on the list.

This made me laugh. I associate the name Fredo with The Godfather; Michael was so ubiquitous I don't associate it with anything in particular. (Well, that's not entirely true since it was my dad's name.)

TBH, I heavily associate a lot of things with The Godfather, just 'cause I love it and have seen it so many times. :)

  • David is my H's name. I think it's classic. He goes by David, but the occasional guy friend calls him Dave.
