Man, did I miss the mark...

I teach second grade, and I thought it was going to be crazy to keep up with 18 seven year olds for 7 hours a day and be a mom. Uh, no. What I've quickly learned is that during the day, I can feed off the kiddos' boundlessly energy and sort of just go into "teacher mode" and handle my biz, so to speak. What I did not anticipate, is how tricky it is to be with my one seven month old when I get us all home. I am dog tired, and I try so hard to engage and play because I haven't seen him all day. But it's hard, and I'm a little resentful other children are getting the better part of my energy now. DH works nights, so I also shoulder the child rearing for the rest of the day solo. I love what I do, but I'm just in that weird transitional stage of being a working parent and learning how to make sense of it all. Cheers to the weekend!!

  • I was literally just thinking about how I'm going to handle being both a teacher and a mom. I don't know how I'll do it, but I suppose I'll find out soon enough! :P

Hope your week went well overall! Are you done already - or just celebrating early? ;-)

  • I totally get it! I'm a sub preschool teacher so on average I work about 3 days a week. The building I work at is a daycare/preschool/kindergarten so on a given day I could work with 6 week olds all the way up to school age kids. I was shocked at how hard it is to get home from a long day, totally exhausted, and still have to be "on". My hub works nights as well so it is difficult! I never once thought about this aspect of being a working mother. I'm just thankful I'm only part time. My hat goes off to you!

  • We have a lot of people moving out of the district because...well, it sucks. The taxpayers don't want to raise taxes more than 2% so every year they take from the school budget to make sure it doesn't happen. One year the choice between laying off 11 teachers and a tax increase that came out to about $4.11/month in their taxes was on the table...and 11 teachers were laid off. Insane. I gotta get the hell outta Dodge...@drea926 Not done for the week...but Friday is on the horizon, and Wal-Mart had 3 carts of clearance wines on sale!!

  • Darn you NH with your regular stores that sell wine!!!

That aside...you should move back to MA :-) :-) :-)

  • I start back tomorrow and I am scared about what is to come. I start teaching in a new school district.
  • @dc2london I'm just sorry for the kids. They are shafted year after year. A few years back they tried to deny money for a new roof for one of the elementary schools that was leaking water into the ceiling tiles and causing mold. It's just asinine. Our union president just shared with us at our opening meeting that teachers in neighboring districts (we're talking about ten or fifteen miles away) are making 10K+ a year more than we are. My good friend went to a district further south and got an 18K pay increase. But when 65 people or more are applying for one teach position year after year, it's so hard to be competitive.
