Hospital/Insurance costs - curious

I'm just curious, if it's not too personal, if you figured out what the total cost was of your pregnancy and NICU stay for baby/babies. Am I weird for doing that?

For my many appointments starting at 16 weeks (incompetent cervix), then hospital bed rest (abruption) at 25 weeks--for 5+ weeks. Emergency c-section (PTL, PPROM) and then a 7 week NICU stay:

Hospital charges: $363,000
Insurance discount/paid: $227,000

Wow am I glad insurance exists! That would otherwise take me a lifetime to pay off, and I couldn't even consider having another baby.

These are just estimates but the charges for us were about $500,000 and we paid less than $500 including copays and $90 for my hospital pump rental bc it got thrown into the new deductible. I pay a good bit out of my paycheck but its worth it. Also covered his 5 rsv shots 100%!!

Eta it's crazy that our charges were so high comparatively. Ds was in 26 days and I was on bed rest for less than 4 before my induction ... I live in a high cost of living area. Maybe that's why???

  • Our stay was 1.4 million that included hospital bedrest for 3 weeks , my delivery at 24 weeks, my daughters 5 month Nicu stay with included a PDA ligation and transfer for 5 days to another Nicu for the surgery . I only paid our deductible thank The Lord! The costs keep increasing now that she's home- visiting nurse, therapy, feeding clinic , developmental clinic, gtube surgery! But she is our million dollar baby and love her to death!

  • Total cost including bedrest for me (3 weeks) and 15 days in the NICU for LO was around $350K. We had a deductible then 90/10 coinsurance. We ended up paying the in network OOP max which was $6K.

We paid $5000 for my 2day bedrest, code O emergency csection, 45 day NICU stay, and all apnea & oxygen equipment that he came home with, and an overnight stay several wks later for a double inguinal and umbilical hernia repair surgery. My insurance paid the balance. I think my DH said it was close to $700,000.

  • We were at 1.2 million for my emergency c-section, 7 day hospital stay including a head CT and neuro consult and her 79 day NICU stay. We paid our OOP max of $6,000.
  • We cost around $1.5 million. We paid OOP max of $2,000 for me and $0 for Anna (good insurance and medicaid covered the rest). In the end, we made money because I have a separate supplemental insurance policy that pays out for hospital stays regardless of who foots the bills. yaaaaaaay. (sarcasm). But we really are thankful we didn't have an additional financial burden.

You are not weird, I requested an itemized statement of her NICU charges the first month just to see. One thing that stood out was paying $12 per ml of poly-vi-sol when I could buy 50ml for $8...

  • The total costs were about 850,000, not including the initial, low-risk pregnancy appointments. The second pregnancy was a bit more because I had additional appointments.

We didn't end up paying anything for the preemie costs, though, because we were able to double insure her and she qualified for Medicare as a low-birth weight baby. I think the rules have chanced for that, though.

  • I had 27w twins. One had a 101 day stay: about 850K. I only paid a couple hundred of that. The other had a 151 day stay before he passed away. His bills were well over 1.6M. We never paid a dime or received a bill for him. They also had supplemental medicaid.

  • My 4.5 week stay, delivery, and my DDs 124 day stay totaled just under $2M.  We paid our deductible and out of pocket max for 2011 and 2012 since her stay bridged the 2 years.  Our out of pocket deductible and co insurance cost us $12,000.  Not cheap but obviously we were thankful for insurance.

  • At one point the insurance claims were over $2 mill but once everything got sorted out I think only about $900k was actually paid out between insurance and Medicaid. That includes my 5 week hospital stay, c-section and my twins 70 day (x2) nicu stay.
