Looking for a place to go for weekend getaway

We live in the NYC area (northern suburb, near Bergen). DH has an unexpected day off next Friday and we would love to take the kids for a relaxing 3 day weekend someplace. Would love the Northern Jersey shore, but have no idea where to stay. We would go any place within a 1-2 hour drive. Any suggestions for great places to go (that might have a last minute opening)?

    How about Long Beach Island?  We absolutely LOVE it there.  It is a shore town, with a great family feel.  We have stayed at Drifting Sands- right on beach and very clean.  We love the great beaches, fun amusements, great shopping, and fabulous eateries!

    We spent the night at Point Pleasant, The White Sands is the name of the hotel. They have a pool and beach access, are within walking distance to the boardwalk which has rides, aquarium, and arcades as well as good food. The hotel also has a great breakfast place. It's not fancy by any means, and I wouldn't quite call the Jersey shore relaxing, but it's a great and fun getaway. I would do it again in a heartbeat!
