My son is still constipated. Have some more questions

So his pediatrician recommended diluted prune juice. Half an oz of water, half an oz of juice. I gave that to him about an hour ago and still I haven't seen any poops and he's pushing really hard as if he's trying. I was told that the prune juice would help soften his poops and it'd be easier for him to go. I've read a lot of things online saying that dehydration is the cause of it, but I highly doubt he's dehydrated because he has 10+ wet diapers a day. So I guess I was wondering how long it should take for the prune juice to make him poop? Is it bad for his little belly? Should I give him more? I've also heard of other moms mixing it in with their formula? Should I do that. And if so how much do I put if say I make a 3 or 4 oz bottle? Any tips and advice would be nice, I'm worried about his poor baby belly. Right now he's pushing so hard and crying and I feel so helpless =(

  • I forgot to mention that he's 7 weeks. He just had a very minor VERY hard poop.

  • I would call the pediatrician and ask about how fast the prune juice is supposed to work and what to do if it doesn't.

  • Did they mention a glycerin suppository? We were told we could use half of a children's one.

  • Hi, I'm new and I don't know if you've tried this but light Karo syrup from the baking aisle. I used it on my LO and she was able to let it all out. Unfortunately, all over her and her carseat and my car.

  • Sorry, I only used 1/8 tsp. in a bottle.  I don't know if you're exclusively breastfeeding or not, I mixed the syrup with 3oz of breastmilk

  • Try inserting a rectal thermometer as if you're taking his temp. That's usually immediate. And yes, you can put prune juice straight into his bottle. If its a 4oz bottle, add 1oz of juice. But it's going to take longer to work. Are you givin him iron supplements or acid reflux meds? Those are causes of constipation, too.

  • Another vote for the Karo syrup! Helps my DD every time ... 1/2 tsp for 4 ounces of formula
  • Warm bath.
