4 month wakeful at 5 1/2 months?

Longtime lurker here, since July of last year. I've never posted but figured now is as good a time as any to start! I have a five month old little boy, who has always been a pretty mellow guy...that is, until recently. We started having to rock and pace him much longer than before, and he wakes up more often, crying. Then we stopped swaddling 5 nights ago because he started turning over in the night and then would scream when he couldn't roll back onto his back. Since then we've had an even harder time getting him to fall asleep at night. He screams and cries for over an hour, no matter how much rocking and pacing we do and a pacifier doesn't help anymore. Do you think this might be the '4-month' wakeful period, even though he's already over 5 months old now? I am going back to work very soon so I worry about sleep training at the same time as starting him at daycare, but I need to get a little sleep too.

  • maybe its just a phase?  if your LO is like mine, one week he will sleep amazing 8-9 hours straight with no crying or wake ups.  then another week like this week its been a struggle to put him down and he wakes up 3-4 times a night.  i really sympathize with you though!

  • Maybe starting teething? That can make them more fussy, cranky, needy and affect sleep.

  • Could be teething. Could also just no be transitioning from the swaddle very well--have you thought about trying one of those magic sleep suits?

  • I agree it might be teething. at 23 weeks my DD just started not sleeping well for naps, but she's also gnawing on EVERYTHING and not eating as much-i think her mouth hurts her. she still sleeps at night but she's sucking her thumb like crazy (she's in the sleep suit) so I think it's comforting for her.

  • No, we didn't get the sleep suit because it seemed kind of expensive and I just kept hoping *tonight* would be the night LO would finally fall asleep on his own and so he wouldn't need it. But it's been a few more days and still no visible progress yet. He keeps rolling onto his belly the second I lay him down, but then screams as if he's not sure how to get back onto his back. We'll keep trying a few more nights and then I might just give in and get a sleep suit. And maybe some teething toys.
