Terrible skin while breastfeeding

Is anyone else having skin problems while breastfeeding? My skin was ok during pregnancy but since birth I've had small bumps covering both cheeks very bumpy and un-smooth. They are white heads and there are so many! Also my keratosis Pilaris on my upper arms is the worse it's eve been red inflamed and everywhere Im trying to hid it with long sleeves not easy in the summer. I don't want to quit breastfeeding because of my own vanity but my derm said there is nothing that will get rid of it that's safe while breastfeeding. Its starting to make me feel very depressed to see all these bump when I look in the mirror. This is mostly a vent, But if anyone has any suggestions I'm open?!

Re: Terrible skin while breastfeeding

  • Me!  I break out all of the time now!  I wish I knew how to stop it as my usual face washing routine is not working.

My skin was great PP until I had my first period, then the pimples really started showing up.  I use the Oil Cleansing Method with coconut oil and it works wonders.  My skin recovered really quickly from the period pimples and is soft and smooth.  I highly recommend trying it.  I know it can be a scary idea to put oil on your face to get rid of zits, but if you're feeling like your skin can't get any worse, it's really the perfect time to try!  GL!
@kari5186 - do you use coconut oil by itself?  I tried OCM for a while (olive oil/castor oil mix), but I didn't really see a difference in my skin, so I quit.  Coconut oil sounds appealing though!

OP - I have had serious issues with acne along my jawline - my DCP even commented on it this week, which makes me feel horrible about it.  From what I read it's hormonal, so I really don't know what I can do about it.

I also have KP - and I think pregnancy made it all a bit better, and it's just getting back to its normal terrible self.  Which is a sad adjustment.  Stupid skin *kicks ground*.

  • @musicalsilver I can't believe a doctor would point that out rude. When people have flaws they notice them more than anyone else we don't need it pointed out to make us feel worse! And my kp was good during pregnancy and now its the worse it's ever been! I hate skin issues stretch marks, veins, cellulite, acne, kp and more I have it all :(

  • @kari5186 - I'll have to revisit OCM with just coconut oil.  Maybe it'll help this stupid jawline acne!  If nothing else, coconut oil smells heavenly, which will be a big improvement over the olive oil smell ;-)

  • I had horrible skin during 1st tri then it cleared up and was amazing until last week. It's still not horrible but I have noticed a difference. I didn't attribute it to breastfeeding but if that's what it is, that sucks!

One thing that helped me a little bit (though I've gotten a bit too lazy to do it again since LO was born) is a scrub made from coconut oil and sugar (I don't remember the exact ratio, but a lot of the internet seems to agree on a 1:2 oil:sugar ratio).  Part of the problem with KP is that your body isn't getting rid of keratin, so I think the exfoliation is really key to helping it make its way out.

But at the same time, I think it really only helped on the back of my arms - I wasn't as diligent about it with the KP on my thighs, so I didn't really see an improvement there - but maybe I would have if I'd been better about scrubbing!
