  I think you should try everything and go with what LO prefers. If I do tomato sauce I use just a little bc LO always rubs her face and gets sauce in her eyes. Otherwise try it all. DD had a Marsala sauce the other day that she adored.
  
  ETA- I made basil pesto from my own plants and DD devoured orzo covered in it. She also does really well eating penne, corkscrew, etc. It doesn't have to be tiny.   barilla makes one.  my pediatrician said i can giver her a little pastina
